Roger, We were friends and drinking buddies, able to share laughter and wry remarks that no one else caught. I was floored by your death, and that reaction has not abated. To me, you were always so special and one of a kind. Speaking of which -- you were one of the kindest, gentlest souls I knew --- not to mention the funniest. Sending you warmest wishes, hugs, remnants of dreams, and whatever is good in this world or next.

First met Roger in November 2003 in Almaty Kazakhstan, where he led a conference as part of USG. As a fellow Brit (the only one) managed to corner him where he regaled me over a drink with tales that made my mind boggle and my eyes widen. A decent man whom I have fond memories of.

Four years on and your friendship and expertise are painfully missed, especially during the time of a coronavirus pandemic. You were a sincere, honest and true friend.
Your heroism and service to your country is known by those few who have the integrity to put dignity, honor and duty ahead of self-interest. May the Lord bless you in His eternity you richly deserve.

I met Roger in the mid 90's, when he was running Plum Island and I, S&T at the Brazilian embassy in DC. One could tell right from the start that he was an absolutely brilliant scientist. And one who knew how to get things done, to boot! Over the years, as he took on increasingly larger responsibilities within ARS&USDA, our common purpose remained to get the US and Brazil to cooperate in facing global challenges such as FMD and dengue fever. We also had in common girlfriends who lived in faraway Brazil and whom we eventually married. Diana and Roger flew in to Brasilia to attend my wedding to Cristina. It will always be one of our most cherished memories. Time and distance and jobs drew us apart over the years, but Cristina and I were sure that the four of us would meet again sometime, somewhere. We were deeply shocked to learn about Roger's passing only recently, through a common acquaintance. Our hearts and prayers go out to Diana.

I last saw Roger in Brussels at the FMD conference in 2007 when he was such fun and so helpful. He gave me a chance actually to "try out" the PCR rapid diagnosis machine so that I could see that even idiots like me would have no trouble at all in operating it. I am in tears.

I'm sure I speak for Roger's many friends and admirers in the UK when I say how very saddened we are to hear this news.
Roger was a tower of strength and the voice of reason, based on science, knowledge and compassion, during the dark days of the UK 2001 Foot and Mouth epidemic.
We will miss him immensely and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

I just found out about Roger. We met with him in 1994 and became friends, having meetings in Athens, Washington, Moscow, Astana, Novosibirsk, etc. He had a lot of talents but one is very special: he was very valuable and supportive friend. He made a lot of good things for a lot of people not only in the USA but in Russia and in Kazakhstan, etc. We all here will never forget him. Sergey, Irina, Julia and Kate Netesov

I'm shocked to have learned the news of Roger's passing. Brilliant, funny, insightful - all mentioned here; grounded, and one of the kindest, most rational and full-of-life people I have ever known. The world has been a better place for Roger's presence in it, and certainly I am, for having known him. My deepest condolences to Diana, Sarah and Jakie, and his other children and siblings. Your strength and love as a family are gifts to help get your through this impossible time. May his oversized, warm, delightful and loving memory forever be for a blessing.

Dear Diane and Family, I have a feeling that Roger passed much too soon. My dad passed at 56 years and it was so unfair, being that he, too, was a vibrant, intelligent and caring person. I happy to have known you at the bureau, and my sincere wishes for you at this time. Fondly, Liz Hines
