I will always remember his mischievous smile and laughing eyes-- windows to one of the kindest hearts and most helpful spirits I've ever known. He was the best friend and next-door neighbor my family ever could have had. My brother, John, and I-- along with our families-- send prayers and love to all the Mackers. He will be greatly missed.

If knowing the son is knowing the father, I know he was the kindest, generous, and persistent of gentlemen, who gave to our freedom - and some gave all. God bless everyone of the Macker clan.

When news of his death came, I felt an immediate tug, and drifted back to a summer day on Edward Avenue. I was five or six, and dismayed as I stood over my first bicycle, now disabled in my front yard. The tire was dead. No adult was at hand to help. Mr. Macker pulled up across the street. I must have called out to him as naturally as to my own father, and like a father he responded. I was soon back in the seat and off. I'm sure I didn't thank him adequately, but I will always carry a child's thanks to him for his quiet long-ago kindness.
