MARY MENOTTI Obituary

MENOTTI MARY PIA MENOTTI (Age 99) Mary Pia Menotti died on October 29, 2015 at her home in Leisure World Village, Silver Spring, Maryland. She was born in Hartford, Connecticut on June 5, 1916, to Josephine and Ernest Pia. Mary graduated from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1940, where she met Amel Menotti; they were married on September 4, 1939. She lived most of her life in Central New York, in Fayetteville and Cazenovia, while Amel was Research Director for Bristol Laboratories (now Bristol Myers Squibb) in nearby Syracuse. Mary was very active in community service organizations during this period, including various positions with the League of Women Voters and service on the Board of the Fayetteville Library. She also managed to find time to raise four children and get a Master's Degree in Geography at Syracuse University. Her son David was an undergraduate at SU at the time, and some of his classmates shared courses with Mary. Her verbatim class notes were much in demand at exam time. After Amel's retirement, they shared many adventures, including several trips to Mexico in their motor home, and owned homes in various parts of the country, including Naples, Florida and Hendersonville, North Carolina. They ultimately decided that proximity to family mattered most, which prompted the decision to move to Maryland, and maintain summer homes in Fayetteville, New York, close to the family summer cottage on Cazenovia Lake. Mary is survived by her children, David (Anne Marie) of Potomac, Maryland, Marilyn Raymond, of Bethesda, Maryland, Robert (Pamela) of Clinton, New York, and Nancy Huntzinger (Bill) of Toledo, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren. Her husband Amel died in 2009 at 96 after 70 years of marriage, and her beloved sister Lee died in 2005. Mary was a loving and intelligent wife and mother who by example and action made a difference. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. Services private. Contributions in her memory can be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation or Doctors Without Borders.Services private.
