As part of the Texas State Society on Capitol Hill, he was directly involved with then Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson and then served as a senior advance man for First Lady "Lady Bird" Johnson and LBJ during his presidential campaign and after his election. While working on Capitol Hill, Bob joined the DC Air National Guard and served as Top Sergeant for the 113th Tactical Fighter Wing based out of Andrews AFB. He was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant from the USAF Reserve and later commissioned with initial assignment to the 9999th Capitol Hill Reserve Squadron, commanded by then Senator Barry Goldwater, MG, USAF Reserve. He subsequently served on active duty with USAF Systems Command under then USAF General Bernard A. Schriever. He eventually returned to the DC Air National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1966 at the rank of Captain before accepting a position in the private sector with Tenneco, Inc. Bob was active in many civic, political and industry groups.
