PATRICIA DOUGHERTY Obituary

DOUGHERTY Patricia Ann Dougherty (née Regan) (Age 90) Passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2020. Patricia was born to the late Lawrence and Clara (née O'Donnell) Regan on June 19, 1930 in Lafayette, Indiana. She was the youngest of eight children and is preceded in death by three sisters, Mary, Madelyn, and Virginia, along with four brothers, Ralph, Harry, Paul and Bill. Patricia grew up in Hoopeston, Illinois. She moved to Washington, D.C. to accept a scholarship to attend the School of Nursing at the Catholic University of America, from which she graduated in 1955. While there, she met Dr. Jude Patrick Dougherty. Patricia and Jude were married on December 28, 1957 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hoopeston. Last year, they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. The couple moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1958, where the first three of their four sons were born. The family moved to Potomac, Maryland in 1966, when shortly after, Jude became Dean of the School of Philosophy at Catholic University. Patricia was an award- winning baker and artist, as well as an avid reader. During Dr. Dougherty's 30-year tenure as Dean, Patricia hosted hundreds of dinner parties for clergy, academics, authors, politicians, students and visiting dignitaries at their home in Potomac. Growing up, all four sons attended local schools. From 1974-75, the family lived abroad in Leuven, Belgium. During her career, Patricia worked as a public health nurse. She was a vocal and long-time advocate forsupplemental assistance to single mothers, as well as youth and public health benefits. She served on the Montgomery Public Health Commission and as the Representative for the League of Women Voters to the Montgomery County Board of Education (1982-1984). Patricia also sat on the Board of Directors of the Potomac Community Center (1985-1988). She is survived by her husband, Dr. Jude P. Dougherty, and her sons, Thomas H. and his wife Lynne, Michael T. and his wife Angela, John C. and his wife Michelle, and Paul R. and his wife Elizabeth. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, Catherine, Grace, William, Madeline, Patrick, Emma, Jacob, Jack, Alexander and Michael. Patricia was devoted to the Virgin Mary and said the Rosary daily. On her wedding day, Patricia sang, On This Day, O Beautiful Mother; and placed flowers at the feet of Our Lady at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. It is comforting that Patricia passed away peacefully at 3 a.m. on December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Friends may call at Saint Raphael Catholic Church, 513 Dunster Rd., Rockville, MD 20854 on Monday, December 14, 2020 from 10 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment All Souls Cemetery, Germantown, MD.
