I know this is 12 years too late but I just wanted to tell the entire Smith family how truly sorry I am to learn of his passing. I was lucky enough to have been General Smith's Driver while stationed at Cherry Point. I was very young and he had such an impact on my. The best part of the day would be picking him up early at the morning from his house on base and spending an hour or so with him before the rest of his Staff were do in. I wish I were a little older so I could really appreciate the amazing position I was given and the even more amazing man I got to know.

To the Smiith Family, we join un your celebration of your husband/father's life. I had the honor to serve under Gen Smith when he was CG go the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, 1982-1985. He was an outstanding leader of Marines and I hold him in the highest regard. My wife, Alicia, remembers his support for the start of the Key Wives program to support the Marine families when their units were deployed. He will be remembered with our highest respect. God Bless all of you during your celebration of his life. Semper Fi ,

Tadgh – and the Smith family I am sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Being that he retired two years before I joined and never having had the opportunity to meet your father, as a fellow Marine, I still feel that I learned from him: great Marines provide a legacy from which all Marines learn. I feel fortunate to have served in the same Marine Corps as General Smith.

Semper Fi General Smith!

Dear Smiths, my heart is heavy thinking about all of you and your loss. Your Dad was such a great man and all around good guy. I still smile thinking about his ramrod straight walk, arms by his side. Once a marine always a marine! Thinking of you all with lots of warm memories. Best, Mariesa Barros

To all nine of General Smith's children, he was in Arleigh Burke with my mother. He loved showing us his scrapbook of the family and was so proud of all of you! Just a few weeks ago, we received the tour of his medals and photos and articles in his room and on the wall. We could have listened all day. He was a ray of sunlight and joy and he will be, and is already, missed.
