Robin Read Obituary

Read, Robin (Brunelli) Robin Read Brunelli, President and CEO of the National Foundation for Women Legislators from 1992 to 2012, passed away on June 2, 2016, after a prolonged and courageous struggle with heart failure. Our celebration of the life of Robin Read Brunelli will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, at the Washington Ritz-Carlton ballroom (22nd Street). During her two decades leading NFWL, Robin transformed the organization into a force in empowering thousands of elected women leaders across the United States. From 1985 to 1992, as a Presidential appointee serving the Governors of the Federal Reserve Board, Robin's achievements included radically improving the effectiveness of training at the Fed's banking school. Robin served on numerous nonprofit and corporate boards and was most proud of her work for The National Women's History Museum. Robin was born in Shenandoah, Iowa, on March 7, 1943, the child of Robert and Maribelle Read. Deaf until she was six, Robin developed such a remarkable emotional connectivity with people that most of us regarded her as an empath. Robin attended the University of New Mexico, where she was an aficionado of William Shakespeare, and lived 22 years in Albuquerque, where she was a realtor, a beloved high school teacher, and a host of the "Kitchen Klatter" cooking and recipe show popular throughout the American Midwest. A lifelong member of The Church of Christ, Scientist, Robin lived her life with a deep sense of awareness of God, and nearly all of us who knew her encountered Divine Love through Robin in ways that astounded us. With her special grace, wisdom, intelligence, and care, Robin impacted thousands of people's lives, leaving a profound legacy of love and joy. Robin is survived by her husband, Sam Brunelli, with whom she shared one of the great love stories most of us have been privileged to witness; by the two girls she loved deeply and helped to raise, Tia Brunelli Mahaffy and Dara Brunelli O'Hara; by their husbands, Tim O'Hara and Michael Mahaffy; by the six children who called Robin their "Mimi": Sam, Grayson, Landon and Blake O'Hara and Anniston and Devon Mahaffy; by her cousins Duane Sullivan, Juli Sullivan Briggs, Kathryn Rydberg Gaver, Tom Rydberg and Lance Rydberg; and by her cousins' families. As we reflect on Robin's life, we see the child who emerged from the realm of silence to communicate to each of us in a way that stirred our heart, lifted our esteem, transformed our soul, and empowered us to live our life from our best self. We see the woman who in the final years of her life taught us strength through her suffering and struggles. After seven decades of a life in which she blessed us daily with her lucid brilliance, compassion, love, wisdom, intelligence, and sense of excellence and achievement, Robin has "slipped the surly bonds of Earth and touched the face of God." And for the remainder of eternity, Robin's inner and outer beauty will never be extinguished from our minds. Robin was a superbly talented truly kind and caring person who continues to be missed by those of us still mortal. She accomplished a tremendous amount of good in her lifetime, all while being a leader in much that continues to benefit our nation. She and Sam were an ideal couple as they shared their paths through life together. I remember Robin with great respect for all she did for humankind. Much is owed to her by many of us. May she rest in eternal peace.

Just learned of Robin's passing. I'm sure Sam and others will say this better than I can but I have never known anyone with comparable unselfish energy and compassion. As a co-worker and a friend, Robin filled every room with the brightness from deep in her soul. She was a very dear friend and I will miss her. My condolences to Sam and her family.

I am very saddened to hear of Robin's passing. She was a beautiful lady inside and out. She helped me through some difficult times at Manzano High School in Albuquerque. She was loved and adored by all of her students and anyone fortunate enough to have met her. Peace and love.

The love of my life has passed on to eternity. Each of us has shared the privilege of knowing one of the most loving human beings who has lived in our time. Few of us know any individual through whom more of the Love of God flowed through to us than it did to us through Robin.

Robin lived out Divine Love in almost every relationship in her life. We remember Robin now, first and foremost, for her kindness, for her profound empathy, and for her love. There was only one person like her in the entire world, and she has left to each of us a legacy of love and joy.

Now Robin has 'slipped the surly bonds of Earth and touched the face of God.' And for the remainder of eternity, her inner and outer beauty will never be extinguished from our minds.

"From her classroom and realty office in New Mexico, Robin Read Brunelli emerged as a national leader in Washington. She has done as much as any individual in American history to empower America's elected women leaders. From the Land of Enchantment to the shores of the Potomac and in all fifty state capitols, her influence, impact and legacy will be felt for decades. We mourn her passing even as we celebrate the life of one of our nation's most gifted, gracious and determined leaders."

"Few of us have ever shared life's journey with anyone like Robin. Yes, we will always remember her pure love for us. And far into the future, most of us will remember and draw inspiration from her vital life force, her spiritual energy, her inner strength, and her mind, that extraordinary mind so visionary, so wise, so intelligent, so intuitive, so perceptive. She touched and empowered us all, women and men, people of all races and cultures, elders, midlifers, rising adults, youth, and children.

"Robin would be the first to remind us that each of us has access to the same Love and Light that she did. Surely we can still hear her calling to us, to take in that Love and Light and pass it on to each person we encounter. May we continue to draw daily inspiration from her exemplary soul. In a world never lacking in its need for more love and more light, may we ever strive to be the world's vessels of Divine Love and Light as reliably and truly as Robin always was.

Robin, who was exceptionally beautiful, both inside and out, will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. I was her friend and interior designer for twenty-six years, and spent many an hour with her working on six projects over the years. A finer lady there never was. She had a deep concern for people, a drive to make a difference in the world, and an ability to accomplish many things simultaneously most of us can only think about. Robin was exceptional in every way. She will forever be in my heart.

I mourn the passing of Dear Friend Robin, a true American Patriot and one who worked tirelessly for the betterment of our nation and for humankind. I well remember her exceptional work at the Federal Reserve during the Reagan Administration, and her great contribution to society and governance as President and CEO of the National Foundation of Women Legislators for over 2 decades. My heart goes out to her husband Sam and to her family at this sad time. Robin gave more to America and our society and culture than she took. Her contributions will live on and she will truly be sadly missed. Go with GOD, Dear Lady. Your Friend, Rear Admiral [Ret.] Jim Carey
