WELLSVILLE - Betty Jean Geffers, 86, a former resident of 104 O'Connor St., passed away into the presence of her Lord on Saturday (May 21, 2016) at the Wellsville Manor Care Center after a long illness.

She was born Dec. 29, 1929, in the Village of Belmont, the daughter of Theodore and Ruth Brandes Geffers.

She was a graduate of Wellsville High School and as a bookkeeper had been employed in a number of local businesses, including Bausch & Lomb, First Trust Union Bank, Ebenezer Oil Co., Wellsville Christian School, Houghton Academy and the Woodlawn Cemetery.

She was a former member of the Belmont Baptist Tabernacle Church and her special interests included knitting, reading and traveling and listening to traditional Christian music. As a member of the church she served as church treasurer, taught Sunday School and Junior Church and usually provided rides to children and adults.

Surviving are a brother, Donald (Grace) Geffers of Wellsville; sisters, Margaret Benedict of Bradenton, Fla., Nancy (Glenn) Schaefer of Redding, Calif., Joanne Wilkins of Wellsville and Janet (Robert) Pearse of Fort Mill, S.C.; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Forest and Dale Geffers.

Friends may call at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville on Saturday (May 28, 2016) from 1 to 3 p.m. when services will be held with Dr. Glenn Schaefer officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville.

Memorials may be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Assoc., Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC, 28201 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Betty and I shared a warm friendship since meeting through common friends decades ago. I was especially blessed to observe her passion and devotion to Christian education at her church, Wellsville Christian School, and Houghton Academy. She worked tirelessly behind the scenes to lighten the load of others. She was meticulous in everything she did. I've never met another soul who could write as small and as neatly as Betty! She was a joy to work with. She so loved being with the children; her face always lit up when students came into the office to chat with her, or we shared photos of them from the past. She also spoke lovingly of her siblings and nieces and nephews who brought her much joy. We have all lost a prayer warrior, but her prayers will echo through heaven for years to come. God is still answering many of her prayers. Thank you, Lord, for the privilege of knowing your humble servant, Betty.

Betty was a sweetheart!She was very talented and shared her gifts willingly with others. She always loved taking children to church. She enjoyed working with us at Wellsville Christian School. She is happy and well at home with her Lord, and I look forward to seeing her again!

I had occasion to run into Betty at many different places she served over the years, but become better acquainted with her during the last 3 years as a resident in Manor Hills two doors down from my mom. I so appreciated our conversations and her love for the LORD. I enjoyed watching Gaither Homecoming videos with her. There is such comfort in knowing her days of pain and confusion are over and she is with her Bridegroom enjoying His presence and joy for eternity.

Betty was a lovely lady and one of the kindest gentlest folks I have known. As the former Headmaster of Houghton Academy, I was privileged to get acquainted with Betty when we opened our elementary campus at the I-86/Rt 19 intersection and she served as our school secretary. Whenever I was on campus, Betty had a warm smile and welcoming words.

Unfortunately, I will be in NC on May 28 and unable to attend the service in Betty's honor. Be assured of my prayers for all of you that God will grant just what is needed each day as you journey through this experience of loss and grief. I rejoice with you that Betty is healed of physical infirmities and now rests in the presence of her Lord and Savior.
