Susan Caine Obituary

Susan (Wooleyhan) Caine, 68, passed away on Feb. 2, 2020, following a lengthy struggle against brain cancer.

She was born March 14, 1951, in Quincy, Ill., to parents Alfred and Ann (Winters) Wooleyhan. She was a 1973 graduate of Smith College in North Hampton, Mass., with a degree in art. She then embarked on a 40-year career in artistic design and publishing by accepting a position with Harvard University Press, followed by a relocation to St. Louis in 1977 that included positions with St. Louis Magazine, Missouri Botanical Garden and Washington University, from where she retired in 2019 as the executive director of Development Communications.

Susan married Luther W. Caine in St. Louis on July 6, 1990, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 10, 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and is survived by her brothers, Alfred Jr. (Trenda) of Effingham, Ill., and John (Barbara) of Quincy; nephew Bryson Wooleyhan of Effingham; niece Laura (Ethan) Beckler of Quincy; aunt Jane Winters of Vero Beach, Fla.; and grand niece and nephew Paige and Riley Beckler of Quincy.

She will be remembered as a very accomplished artist, a skill that she had looked forward to pursuing more fully in retirement. She had a warm, giving, and always positive outlook on life, supporting many charitable causes with her time and resources.

Her remains have been cremated, with internment at a later date in Quincy. There will be no visitation or memorial service. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Jian Campian and the staff at the Siteman Cancer Center, as well as the nursing staff at Laclede Groves for their caring and devotion during this difficult time. Memorials may be made to the Washington University General Scholarship Fund at Campus Box 1082, One Brookings Drive, St. Louis, MO 63130-4899.

To the families of John, Alfred, and to Jane Winters:

I was fortunate to grow up in Quincy with Susan; she was my sister Lynn's best childhood friend, just as Susan's cousin Kathryn was my best friend.

We have wonderful memories of our school years together in Quincy, as well as Girl Scout outings and badge adventures since Ann, Susan's mother, and my mother were co-leaders together.

Susan and I relocated to St. Louis at nearly the same time and with Kathryn, often shared dinners out together catching up on Quincy news. More recently she had just reconnected with my sister and their close-knit junior high circle of friends, and I was invited to share lunch with that group. What a treat to hear about their amusing escapades together injected with Susan's humorous commentary!

Susan's creativity, joy, generosity, intellect, and wit was infused into everything she did--so evident from the premier St. Louis institutions which employed her.

Please accept my sincere condolences at this time of sorrow. May you all cherish your own memories made together with Susan and keep her ever with you.

I love Susan, she dealt with my father which must have been difficult, she was a very understanding person looking for good rather than bad. When I called her number and her friend answered, told me she was sick and unable to talk my heart sank thinking how unfair life is knowing that she never got to move to Fl which was her plan. She was a awesome women, top shelf can't say enough good about her.

So sorry to hear this. Susan was a beautiful girl, someone I admired, in school. I remember her modeling for our drawing class at Quincy Art Center. It is good to hear that she had so much success in her career.
