Raymond Baker Obituary

Raymond Winslow Baker Sr., 94, of Bridgewater, passed away on May 14, 2020. He was the eleventh of twelve children born to the late General and Nannie (Manning) Baker on April 14, 1926 in Brockton. He was baptized at an early age and was a longtime member of Lincoln Congregational Church, where his father was a founding Deacon. He most recently attended Lighthouse of Faith in Christ Jesus Church until his health began to fail. In 1951, Raymond married the late Margaret "Peggy" Johnson and to this union five children were born. Raymond attended Brockton Public Schools and graduated from Brockton High in 1944. After graduating from high school, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served as a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen that helped reshape the worlds future during World War II, until his honorable discharge in 1946. His trailblazing career continued when he joined the Brockton Police Department in 1959. After serving as a patrolman for a number of years, Raymond had the distinction of being appointed as the Department's first African American detective in 1964. He served in various roles of increasing responsibility within the Department until his retirement in 1984. Raymond was a kind, caring, generous and thoughtful man that loved his family and loved his music. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and cherished hearing them call him "Papa Baker". When it came to his music, he had a very soothing, mellow voice and kept his boom box with him at all times so that he was prepared to sing whenever he had a chance! Gospel, jazz, blues, R&Bhe loved all genres of music and if you rode in his car, you would likely get a good dose of some James Brown during the ride! Raymond is survived by four sons, Raymond Jr., Joseph, Richard, and Mark Baker, all of Brockton; one daughter, Vivian Baker Blake (Dwayne) of Hampton, VA; brother, Melbourne Baker Sr. of Brockton; special friend, Norma Correia of Brockton; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will now join in eternal peace, his siblings Joseph Baker, Edna Tubbs, Lloyd Baker, Geraldine Holland, Bernice Marrow, Christine Tina Solomon, Marcia Tubbs, Harrison Baker, Roger Baker, and Mary E. Baker. The family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. David Driscoll and his wife Mary Beth, the Bridgewater Veterans Club and the Baypointe Rehabilitation and Skilled Care facility team. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, funeral services are private. Visit www.waittfuneralhome.com or call 508-583-7272 for more information.

So very sorry to hear of the passing of Ray. We were his neighbors at Fox Run years ago. He was such a wonderful man! So kind. We would see him working every time there was a vote in town. He always volunteered his time at the voting booth. He always inquired about our young son too, who is now almost 25. Rest In Peace.

To the Baker Family,

My deepest sympathy and condolences on the loss of your dear Father. I had the pleasure and honor of working with him for many years when I was in the Secret Service and had cases in Brockton. He was respected and liked by all who knew him. We spent a few evenings at the old Eldios too that are fond memories. He was the ultimate professional, gentleman and class act.

The world has lost a true gem!

God bless,
Tom Cruise

My condolences to the Baker family. I grew up across the street from the Baker family in Brockton. Mr. Baker was always so kind and caring. When I was done working the late shift at Eldios Restaurant, if Mr. Baker was there, he would always ask if I needed a ride home even though I lived just one half mile away. Mr. Baker was a wonderful, caring, and compassionate man. From one airman to another, I salute you, sir. RIP

To the entire Baker family I extend my sincere and profound condolences. Ray was the epitome` of a true gentleman and friend. I am honored to have been a small part of his life, and it was a memorable association that I shall cherish for the rest of my existence. After discovering that he was a "Redtail", just enhanced our friendship. We shared several very dear interests, but his devotion to family, admiration of his children, their accomplishments and extending to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren always took precedent over our varied conversations. He will be truly missed, but certainly never forgotten. Lifting a glass of wine to your memory, good friend!

Mark, I am so sorry for your loss.

May 17, 2020

This breaks my heart. I worked with Ray in the BCI for man years and he was one of my favorite people, always king, caring and fun to be around. He accomplished many things in his lifetime but many folks never knew about them because he never bragged about himself. I lived in the same neighborhood as his family when I first came to Brockton and the Baker family were well respected by all. Ray was a special person to me and he and his kind gentle ways will be sadly missed by all.

As a teacher in Brockton from 1971-2004, I had the privilege of teaching several members of the Baker family. I can honestly say that these kids were all well-mannered, bright, attentive, wonderful human beings. I'm a better person from my experience with this family.

This breaks my heart. I worked many years in the BCI with Ray and he was one of my most favorite people, always a quiet, kind, caring person and fun to be around. He accomplished many good things in his lifetime but few people knew about them as he never bragged about himself. He actually grew up in my old neighborhood when I first came to Brockton. The Baker family were very well respected by all and I can't say enough about the goodness of Ray and his family.
