Lowell U. Hammett

Lowell Underwood Hammett of Bonita Springs, Fla., passed away Monday, June 13, 2011, at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, with his wife and two sons at his side. Born in Vineyard Haven on Martha's Vineyard, he resided later in Newton and Natick, where he became an officer of Newton Savings Bank, Suffolk Franklin Savings Bank and Middlesex Savings Bank. Lowell's passion for masonry started when he was raised on March 10, 1969, Norumbega Lodge AF&AM, Newtonville. He was Worshipful Master of Norumbega Lodge from 1976-1977, and served as District Deputy Grand Master, Brighton Fifth Masonic District from 1980-1981. Additionally, Lowell held the following positions, Senior Grand Deacon, 1982; Grand Sword Bearer, 1984-1986; Grand Representative, Finland, 1986 - present; Grand Marshall, 1987-1989; Henry Price Medal, 1989; Senior Grand Warden, 1990; Grand Lodge Board of Directors, 1993-1999; Affiliated The Masters Lodge, 1984; Charter Member Affiliated Mount Holyoke Lodge, 1989; Honorary Member, Affiliated Winslow Lewis Lodge, 1990; St. Andrew's Royal Arch Chapter, 1981; High Priest, 1985; Boston Council, Royal & Select Master Masons, 1981; St. Bernard Commandery, 1981; Commander, 1993; Valley of Boston, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 4th-32nd degrees, Dec. 9, 1978; Most Wise Master, Mt. Olivet Chapter of Rose Croix, 1996-1999; Coroneted 33rd Degree - Sept. 29, 1998. Lowell will be dearly missed by his family and a long list of close friends. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean Hammett of Bonita Springs, Fla., sons, Christopher and his wife, Paula, of Holliston, Steven and his wife, Lyn, of Worcester, and his faithful canine companion of six years, Trudy. Grandpa will also be missed by three grandsons, David, Michael and Eric of Holliston; and his only granddaughter, Kristina and her husband, Jesse Johnson, of Ashby; and five great-grand children, Dustin, Brendan, Jesse Jr., Nicole and Ryan, all of Ashby. A private service and burial was held for family and close friends on June 20, 2011, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Newton Lower Falls. The family is requesting that donations be made to the Masonic Home in Charlton, Mass.
