Hugh was honored even treasured by his students and peers in art. At one point he suggested my reciting poetry as an art "happening" during one of the shows at the former Women's Improvement Club, transformed into a permanent show facility. This was prescient because when Lawrence Ferlinghetti was unable to attend an opening of something he painted, I read from "Tyrannus Nix" about the tricky President Richard and what his ascendance to power meant in history. (It was his birthday a few days prior.) A small crowd gathered and greeted all of a sudden poetry with enthusiasm.
Hugh was down to earth and far-sighted at the same time. He had many a story to tell about the Mafia moving in to become the extremely well-supplied local waste collection industry including a couple of heavies casually warning him to don't worry about it pal; or the things brought home from Europe where his father was head salesman for the now-fabulous Duesenberg automobile, made in Indiana; or how he survived being raked by machine-gun fire and being told by another soldier to crawl towards him, which he did; or the post-WWII NY art scene where he was put on the up-elevator if only he played the game, and he refused. He was a citizen and an artist who transcended the era in which he lived.
