Dean Paules Obituary

YORK Dean L. Paules, 83, died Sunday, December 14, 2014, at the York Hospital. He was the beloved husband of JoAnn S. (Chronister) Paules. Mr. and Mrs. Paules celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on June 21, 2014. Born November 21, 1931, in Shrewsbury, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Grissinger) Paules. Dean was a graduate of New Freedom High School and Rehrig School of Electronics. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, and the Country Club of York. Dean enjoyed and designed his garden. He was an avid pilot and flew his own plane for many years. He was a HAM radio operator with call letters W3AGU. A professional portrait painter, Dean was trained in electronics, not art, but he pursued an interest in painting from his early years. While following a career in business, he also created award-winning landscapes of his native Pennsylvania and the eastern U.S. It was not until the mid-1980s that Dean turned to portraiture full time, after selling his successful plastics firm. Largely self-taught, he emerged a standout in a room of contemporary painters. Whether a Paules portrait emphasizes emotion or restraint, it is always a minutely detailed painting, unerringly true to life. His subjects included Nobel laureate Dr. George Hitchings; General Richard Ellis, Commander of SAC and NATO; Ralph Larsen, CEO, Johnson & Johnson; Peter R. Dolan, CEO & Chairman, Bristol-Meyers-Squibb; William W. Boechenstein of Owens Corning Fiberglass Corporation; David Johnson CEO, Campbell Soup; Chuck Williams, Williams Sonoma, San Francisco, California; Sean O'Keaffe, Head of NASA; and General Conway, Commandant of Marines. In 1991, Dean won the grand prize at the National Portrait Seminar in Atlanta. On the back of every portrait, Dean wrote "to the Glory of God". In addition to his wife, JoAnn, Dean is survived by a daughter, Deborah A. and her husband, Arnfinn Stokkan of Sunny Isles Beach, FL; a brother, Daryl and his wife, Lois Paules of New Freedom; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York, with his pastor, Dr. Michael A. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in New Freedom Cemetery. A viewing will be held Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601; or to the York Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 1968, York, PA 17405. Arrangements by the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St. York, PA 17403 www.etzweilerfuneralhome.com

Dean was an extremely gifted "gentle-man" who I always looked forward to visiting with. His amazing portraits always made me wonder how anyone could capture one's true likeness and soul on canvas.

He was a gift from God!

But now the Gift is returned to his rightful place in heaven!

God bless Dean!

JoAnn...you are in our thoughts and prayers!

JoAnn -

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. George and Dean's friendship go back a long way to the time when he had his own company - think of both of you often since moving to NC - the portrait he painted in 1986 of George still hangs in our NC livingroom - and everytime I look at it it reminds me of all the goods times we shared over the years. Again, my deepest sympathy
