Joe Pittman Obituary

Joe D. Pittman

Zanesville - Joe D. Pittman, previously of New Concord, was called home to the Lord on Monday, August 6th, 2018 while in the care of Genesis Hospital. Joe was born on January 26th, 1936 in Beallsville, Ohio to Luther and Ada (Farrabee) Pittman. He enjoyed working on his farm where he raised cattle and had a large truck patch. Many friends enjoyed the harvest provided by the large garden via his roadside produce stand and at the local grocery store. He received his doctorate from The Ohio State University in Agricultural Education in 1974. He retired from The Ohio State University Extension Service in 1992.

He was cherished and held in high esteem by his children. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was an active member of the Church of Christ serving as a deacon at the Fishinger and Kenny congregation (Columbus, Ohio) and as one of the first elders to serve at the New Concord congregation. He was also an instructive and challenging Bible class teacher.

Joe is survived by his wife, Barbara, whom he married on September 22nd, 1957, his children, Michael (Leilani) Pittman, Mark (Lori) Pittman, Joy (Joseph) Cronin, and Matthew (Elizabeth) Pittman. He will also be deeply missed by his 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, as well as his numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters, Lester, Oscar, Vessie (Melvin) Bryd, Wilma (Carl) Kinzy, Wanda, Lloyd, Ray (KIA in Korea) as well as his business partner and close friend, Bill Aitken.

Friends and family may call at the Farus Funeral Home of New Concord from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm on Thursday, August 9th, 2018, with an additional hour preceding the funeral service to be held Friday, August 10th at 11am at the New Concord church of Christ building. Dick Harris will officiate services, and burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Primrose Retirement Community, Genesis Hospital, The Oaks at Bethesda and Genesis Hospice Care for the love and care they provided. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the India Missions Program (c/o New Concord church of Christ P.O. Box 65, New Concord, Ohio 43762) or Genesis Hospice Care (713 Forest Ave, Zanesville, Ohio 43701).

Barb and kids, so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I really enjoyed Joe growing up in New Harrisburg in the early 60s. Joe had hired me to mix mortar as he laid up a block foundation for his barn on the property beside my grandparents, Paul and Mabel McCort. When you folks moved to Columbus, I drove to your house for a visit shortly after getting my license in about 1968 or 9. He will surely be missed.

Dear Barb and Family,
We were shocked and saddened to learn of Joe's making that trip to be with the Lord. We enjoyed and respected him for his humor as well as his many capabilities.
We know you and his family will miss him. Our prayers are with you.

My deepest condolences to everyone. Joe was a very special person to me as he was my supervisor when I was an Extension Agent in Steubenville. Everyone loved Joe. God bless him and his family

Barb & Family,

My sincere condolences go out to you and your family.

Joe was a great man. Fun to be around and just talk to. He especially like to harass my son Matt ("Little Virg"). I have always thought of you two from time to time...thinking i would like to visit and see how things were going, but like everything else in today's world, we often forget about the greatest small things that mean the most. In our family, I know, Joe will be remembered...everytime we pass the church in New Concord, or driving by your home, we will think of him. I pray that you and your family are in good health and hope to visit with you soon. Take comfort in knowing that Joe will be taken care of for eternity and someday you will join him for the remainder of time.

May God Bless You All,

Tim & Mary Ann Graham

My sincere sympathy goes to the family and special thoughts and prayers for Barb. Remembering the happy times and many conversations with her about her Joe and mine shared when we worked at H&R Block in Cambridge. Prayers for all.
