Michael Satterfield Obituary

A life well-lived, a heart deeply loved. Michael "Mike" Clay Satterfield, 77, of The Villages, Florida, formerly of Fairmont, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, at Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages, surrounded by love. Born on June 25, 1947, in Fairmont, WV, Mike was the son of the late Sam Satterfield and Louise Miller. He was also lovingly raised by his late stepmother, Ennie Satterfield and late stepfather, Red Miller. A proud West Virginian by birth, Mike carried with him a strong sense of family, loyalty, and wit that endeared him to all who knew him. Mike was a U.S. Army veteran who honorably served from 1968 to 1971, including a tour in Vietnam. During his service, he received numerous honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device (60), Army Commendation Medal, and was recognized as an Expert Rifleman during the Vietnam Counteroffensive Phase. After his military service, Mike worked as a coal miner, a skilled contractor, and later became the proud owner and operator of Home Town Depot, where his hard work and charisma left a lasting impression in the community. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mickey Satterfield, who lovingly describes him as "the love of my life, soul mate, gentle and loving." His children: Clay Satterfield of Seattle, Washington; Cami (Jody) Handlan of White Hall, WV; and John McDougal of Monongah, WV. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Tristan Matthews of Panama City Beach, FL; Haleigh McDougal (Landon Earick) of Rio Grande, OH; Nick McDougal (Kaleigh Mock) of Monongah, WV; Joslyn Handlan of White Hall, WV; Tyler Echols of Morgantown, WV; Dezmon Satterfield of Fairmont, WV; and Oliver and David Satterfield, both of Seattle, WA. He was also blessed with a great-grandchild, Lennox Matthews of Panama City Beach, FL. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Megan Satterfield, beloved grandson Brendan Matthews, his sister Sally Rutherford, with whom he shared a close and loving bond, his mother-in-law Colleen Salai, and extended family members Kenny and Muggy Gamble, who he adored so much in life. He is also survived by his former wife and friend, Carla Satterfield; brother-in-law and friend, Jack Rutherford; daughter-in-law Angie McDougal; and many other special family members and friends who held a meaningful place in his heart. Also by his side through it all was his faithful dog, Marley, who helped comfort and ground Mike during the last few challenging years of his Alzheimer's journey - a constant companion and true source of peace. Mike was a graduate of Fairmont East High School and attended Fairmont State College. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, skiing, whitewater rafting, canoeing, camping, and golfing. He was a devoted sports fan and loved nothing more than good conversation and time spent with friends. Throughout his life, Mike was known for his humor, wisdom, and deep love for his family. And for everyone who knew him well-let's not forget his "famous OCD". Whether through stories told around the table, escapades around the campfire, or quiet acts of kindness, he left an indelible mark on those who knew and loved him. We want to recognize Mike's service and the life he lived with love, strength, and integrity. A celebration of Mike's life will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, beginning at 5:00 PM at Green Hills Country Club, 126 Greenhills Drive, Fairmont, West Virginia. A buffet dinner will be provided as we gather to remember and honor him. In addition, the family will attend a private and well-earned military honors ceremony at the National Cemetery in Grafton, to be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association (donorservices.alz.org) or Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages, FL (cornerstone hospice.org). He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved him. The family of Mike Satterfield extends their deepest thanks for your kindness, love, and support during this time. Your presence and shared memories mean more than words can ever express. Let us all raise a glass and say Cheers to Mike and the life he lived so fully - may his memory continue to bring smiles, stories, and strength to all who knew and loved him. "What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us." - Helen Keller

Sheila and I met Mike and Mickey as neighbors in The Villages, FL. Mike was a good friend, who was always fun to be around. We enjoyed golfing, beer, and bourbon together on many an occasion. Even got him on a motorcycle for awhile. Condolences to Mickey and his family. He will be missed.
