Thomas Mayer Obituary
Thomas C. Mayer, of The Villages, FL, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at Cornerstone Hospice, with his family by his side during his final, precious moments. Tom's spirit is now with the universe, in heaven, and forever in our hearts.
Tom was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a kind and generous soul. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol A. (Heltshe) Mayer; his son, Robert "Rob" Mayer, and daughter-in-law, Diane, of Avondale, PA. He was deeply loved and respected by all who knew him-for his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering kindness.
Born on September 25, 1944, in Ardmore, OK, Tom was the beloved son of James R. Mayer and Mary Gloria (Grimm) Mayer. He was raised in Lancaster, PA, where he spent much of his life. As a teenager, he delivered newspapers and worked at Speed's Sub Shop, where he learned the art of building the perfect sub. He later discovered a passion for photography and spent his early years capturing memories as a wedding photographer.
A proud graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School (1962), Tom went on to earn both his bachelor's (1966) and master's degrees (1969) from Villanova University. He absolutely loved watching and supporting his Nova Wildcats basketball team over the years. He began his career teaching at Lancaster Catholic before transitioning into banking, where he specialized in education and personnel management. He was part of the team that brought the first ATM to Lancaster. In 1985, he was appointed Executive Director of the Pennsylvania American Institute of Banking. He ended his career at Union National Bank in Mt. Joy (1988-2004). A gifted speaker and communicator, he earned numerous public speaking awards and had a rare talent for connecting with individuals and groups alike.
Each year, Tom spent time at the Malvern Retreat Center in silent reflection, which nourished his spirit. He was a natural teacher and mentor, leaving a lasting impression on colleagues and students.
In 2000, Tom and Carol moved to Mt. Gretna, PA. There, he volunteered at the playhouse and led a capital campaign to raise funds for the Mt. Gretna Fire Company. In 2013, they retired to The Villages, FL, where they enjoyed their later years together.
Tom lived a full and joyful life. He loved boating on the Susquehanna River, traveling-especially to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands-playing golf, writing, painting, and swimming laps. In retirement, he even attended clown school in The Villages and delighted in bringing laughter to nursing homes and respite centers.
Above all, Tom will be remembered for his deep compassion, steady guidance, and the love he poured into his family and community. He had a gift for making others feel seen and valued, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
