Michael J. Blackham August 31, 1977 – June 6, 2025
Michael J. Blackham, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on June 6, 2025, at the age of 47.
Born in Bath, NY and raised in Hoboken, NJ, Michael was a proud graduate of Hoboken High School, where he developed a lifelong love for basketball and built friendships that would last a lifetime. His Hoboken childhood friends were more than friends—they were family, and he lovingly referred to them as his “cousins.” Among them, Anthony, John, and Jason held a special place in his heart. Their steadfast support through all stages of his life was one of his greatest blessings.
Michael began his career working in bars and restaurants and later served as a security professional at Trump International in New York City. In 2009, he relocated to the Ithaca area, where his life took a meaningful turn. He joined Cornell University in 2010, starting in campus dining and quickly rising to Kitchen Supervisor. With an insatiable curiosity and deep respect for the culinary arts, Michael learned the food industry from the ground up—preparing soups and sauces and working alongside accomplished chefs. He thrived in both the kitchen and front-of-house operations and was known not only for his service excellence but for his mentorship of student workers. Lifting others up was Michael’s calling, and his Cornell friends and colleagues became a second family who left a lasting mark on his heart.
Michael’s warmth extended far beyond the workplace. He had a magnetic personality and a heart as generous as they come. He could make anyone laugh—whether with a quick-witted remark or a laugh-out-loud outfit. He especially loved dressing up for the holidays, donning a hot dog shirt for the Fourth of July or one of his many Christmas-themed T-shirts, with Elf and A Christmas Story among his favorites. For Michael, Christmas wasn’t just a season—it was a state of mind. His home was decorated with holiday cheer all year long.
A true renaissance man, Michael had an encyclopedic knowledge of history, sports, animal science, and music. His memory was extraordinary—he could recite historical speeches, poetry, and lyrics from artists ranging from Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra to the Bee Gees. Everything was his “favorite,” and he approached the world with wonder and enthusiasm. Michael brought joy, heart, and humor to every moment. While he never married, there were a few very special women who stole his heart and their love will remain with him forever.
Michael had a deep appreciation for religion and spirituality, drawing wisdom from both Christianity and Buddhism. He loved animals and had a remarkable tenderness for them. His beloved Shih Tzu, Ozzie, was a cherished companion, and in recent years, he adopted a black and white kitten named Little Mikey. Despite being allergic, Michael never turned away an animal in need—even once caring for a family of raccoons. He believed in the joy of a good meal and found deep meaning in conversations with those he loved.
Michael is survived by his mother, Christie Blackham; his sister, Nicole Cippoletti (née Blackham); brother-in-law Rick Cippoletti; nephew Henry; and niece Amelia. He also leaves behind many loving uncles, aunts, cousins, and countless friends across Hoboken, New York City, and Ithaca.
Michael lived his life with sincerity, loyalty, and generosity. He never took—he only gave. His legacy is one of kindness, laughter, humility, and unwavering support for others. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Visitation will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025 from 3-5pm, with a Memorial service at 5pm at Bangs Funeral Home in Ithaca, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael’s name to the Tompkins County SPCA or to your local animal shelter or humane society. Michael would want us all to foster, rescue, and love animals in need.

"Brooklyn Mike" came to work with me one summer in housekeeping. Our crew pressure-washed Risley Hall and other buildings at Cornell.
We became fast friends for our love of History, language, Spirituality, and the `King of Queens´ (The city of my birth).
I will miss his conversations but more so his friendship.
To quote Arthur in The King of Queens: "This one´s for O´Shannon!"
