Richard Fenton

Richard L Fenton, 82, A longtime resident of Groton NY, passed away on July 28, 2025, while under the loving care of his family and Hospicare. Born March 10, 1943, in Edwards, NY to his late parents Luke A Fenton and Celia M (Peabody) Fenton. The youngest of 12 total siblings. Richard was employed at Smith Corona in Groton for 17 years and went on to work for another 24 years at Cornell University, as a custodian, where he retired in 2007. He was a volunteer with the Cortland County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for 9 years at the Cortland Regional Medical Center. He was a man of few words who never needed or asked for much, except for a "million dollars". Often quiet but enjoyed the company of friends and family around him. A favorite saying of his: "you never know". You never know how much time you have, so spend those quality moments with the people you love. He enjoyed working in his garage - a "handyman" to all in his family, camping, traveling on many trips with the Cortland Seniors group, hunting, playing competitive board games and strawberry shortcake. He will be missed. Richard is survived by his daughters Roxanne Fenton (Anthony Smith), Robin (Tim) Roy and Erin (Shaun) Skinner; six grandchildren, Avery (Kelsey) Fenton, Charnee Moore, Brittney Smith, Destini Smith, Damian Fenton, Logan Roy; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Tyler, Marie Walsh and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years Emily, his parents, 2 brothers and 9 sisters. Private graveside services for Richard and his late wife (Emily) will be on August 9th, 2025, in the Groton rural cemetery with a gathering to follow.
