WEAVERVILLE – Robert D. Ray, a beloved member of the Weaverville community, passed away on January 1, 2025, in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Born on March 18, 1937, in Madison County, North Carolina, Robert was the son of William Ralph Ray and Pauline Wilson Ray, who have both preceded him in death.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army before embarking on a dedicated career at Thermo-Fisher and Kendro until his retirement in 2002. Robert was known for his humble demeanor and soft-spoken nature, often leaving profound impressions with his words few but meaningful. His loving spirit and Godly presence made him a cherished figure in the lives he touched.
Robert was a member of Faith Baptist Fellowship, where he found joy and companionship among fellow believers. He had a deep passion for several interests, including fishing, reading—particularly history and the Bible—and tracing his ancestry, which allowed him to connect with the past and instill a sense of history in those around him.
He is survived by his two daughters, Tammy Ponder (Alvin) of Weaverville, and Lora Freeman (Joe Griffey) of Weaverville; his brother, John Smith (Phyllis) of Hendersonville; and his cherished grandchildren, Jordan Burchette (Mason), Cody English (Emilie), Derek Ponder (Gen), and Lucas Fore. Robert also leaves behind great-grandchildren, Emmeline Burchette, Landon Ponder, Hailey Ponder, and Walker Burchette, who will carry forward his legacy of love and kindness.
Robert was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Peggy Whitt Ray, whom he married in 1963 and who passed away on March 11, 2017. Their enduring partnership remains a testament to a life filled with mutual respect and affection.
