David Willy Obituary

David Eric Willy, age 77, of Sun City, Arizona, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025. Born on October 12, 1947 in East Lansing, Michigan, David lived a full and generous life marked by devotion to family, service to others, and a strength of character that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his parents, William J. Willy and Shirley R. Bricker/Stafford; his brother, Bricker Willy; and Karen Wheeler, Willy (Hubbard), the mother of his children. David was a proud and loving father to Wendy Beck (Matthew Beck) and Eric Willy, who carry forward his kindness, humor, and integrity. He was a beloved brother to Paul Willy (Linda) and Tom Willy (Susan) and a cherished uncle to Colin Willy, Tyler Willy, Rachel (James Perez), Sarah Willy and her daughter Trinity, Rebecca (Derek Lancioni) and their children, Oliver and Eleanor. David also shared a unique and lifelong friendship with Edward Johann who he could always rely on. David dedicated 47 years of his life to United Airlines, where he worked as a Lead Ramp Serviceman, proudly holding many titles throughout his career. He was a respected IAM Union representative, always advocating for his coworkers and peers with integrity and resolve. A gifted athlete and lifelong sports enthusiast, David played basketball in college at North Park College and Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. He later became an avid golfer with not one, but three hole-in-ones to his name. David had a deeply personal connection to the Illinois Eye Bank, having undergone cornea transplants in both eyes. He devoted time to working with NACT and the Eye Bank, helping others understand the importance of anatomical donation. His passion for this cause continues in his legacy. Celebrating 26 years of sobriety, David had recently received his sobriety coin-a milestone he held close to his heart. He served as an inspiration and mentor to others in recovery, offering strength, understanding, and an unwavering shoulder to lean on. David was known for his booming voice, infectious laugh, and what many fondly called his "gentle giant" spirit. His presence would light up a room. His bear hugs were legendary-warm, genuine, and sometimes physically uplifting. And every December, he brought joy to countless children by donning the red suit and playing Santa Claus. With his real beard and hearty laugh, many truly believed he was the real Santa. David's life was full of purpose, joy, and service. He will be missed beyond words but remembered with gratitude and love by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Memorial contributions may be made in David's honor to the Illinois Eye Bank – ISPB, https://eyehealthillinois.org/announcement/illinois-eye-bank/
