DOUGLAS ROBERT CHANDLER
In loving memory of Douglas Robert Chandler who died unexpectedly on January 8, 2025 in Phoenix, AZ at the age of 78. Douglas was a beloved husband and father and an extraordinary person who touched many people with his humor, brilliance and kindness.
Douglas was born June 14, 1946 in Buffalo, NY to Robert and Louise Chandler, but grew up in Phoenix. He graduated from Brophy College Preparatory in 1963. He then attended the University of San Francisco where in 1967 he received his degree in history, and where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honorary Society, the Scabbard and Blade Honorary, and the rifle team. He received his law degree in 1970 from the University of Michigan Law School where he was a member of the Law Review. It was also at the University of Michigan that he met his wife, Mary. While in school, he enrolled in the US Army ROTC. He went on to serve in the US Army Reserves, resigning at the rank of Captain.
Douglas had a long and distinguished career as an attorney. Upon graduation from law school, he joined the law firm of Lewis and Roca, where he practiced for 35 years. He later practiced with Mohr Hackett (later Sherman and Howard) before opening his solo practice in 2010. He was a member of the State Bar of Arizona and the American Bar Association, serving on various committees in both organizations. A published legal scholar, he authored a 2002 treatise on Article 9 of the UCC, and its annual supplements through 2024, taught many legal education seminars over the span of his career and was a court recognized expert witness. He also served on Phoenix Mayor Terry Goddard's community development bond committee and received recognition for his work on affordable housing.
To those who knew him best, Douglas will be remembered as a man of enthusiastic curiosity and wide-ranging interests, an audiophile and classical music lover, a bibliophile and student of military history, and a competitive target shooter. He was also a man of faith, which was evident in the way he treated people and his lifelong service at All Saints Episcopal Church, which began in his youth as a member of the Children's Choir. For most of his life he was an integral member of the All Saints' hospitality ministry, served several terms on the vestry and a term as vice-chancellor.
Douglas is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary and their son, Giles. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Anne Brown and her husband Alan of Maitland, FL, and by his cousin Susanne Holm and her husband Gordon of Carmel, CA.
