Shirley Kennell Obituary

Shirley Ann Kennell, age 95, of Surprise, Arizona, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025. She was born on April 24, 1930, in Flint, Michigan, to Volney (Ted) Smith and Elsie Griffin. Shirley grew up in Flint and attended Flint Technical High School. On April 15, 1950, she married the love of her life, James R. Kennell, and together they built a family grounded in love, laughter, and resilience. A lifelong athlete and sports enthusiast, Shirley played volleyball for more than 30 years and also gave back to the sport as a referee for junior high and high school games. She was admired for her energy, fairness, and dedication, both on and off the court. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Sharon Hynes-Michael (Scott Michael); her son, Steven Kennell (Susie); ten grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of immense joy and pride. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Kennell; her son, James E. Kennell; her brother, Robert J. Smith; and her son-in-law, Jeffery Hynes. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Emilia Damian and the staff of Sunshine Residential Care Home for their compassionate care and support. Shirley will be remembered for her warmth, her love of family, her love of volleyball, and the kindness she shared throughout her long and full life.
