Walter Brown Obituary

Walter T. Brown Jr., 88 years old, was called home by the Lord on September 27, 2025. He was born in 1937 to Walter T. and Dorothy Bayne Brown and grew up in Missouri, Kansas, and Ohio. Walt excelled in math, science, chess, golf, wrestling, and cross-country. Walt entered West Point as a 17-year-old, totally unfamiliar with the military. The challenges of cadet life were lessened when he met Peggy, whose sister was engaged to a classmate. Walt and Peggy married in 1960 and began a life of love and adventure. God blessed them with four children and their wonderful spouses: Walter III, Robert (Marla), Margaret McDowell (Jim), and Elizabeth Beason (Jeff). They have also been blessed with nineteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Walt's love for his family was second only to his devotion to Jesus Christ. Among other accomplishments in his military career, Walt was an Army Ranger and Paratrooper, served in the 82nd Airborne Division, was the director of Benet Labs in NY, earned a Master's degree (physics and math) from New Mexico State, and received a National Science Fellowship to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Walt served with the 187th Infantry in Vietnam where he was awarded two Bronze stars. Walt was an Associate Professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy (he had transferred to the Air Force) and later he directed science and technology studies at the Air War College. He retired as a Colonel after 21 years of service. Walt's second career began in earnest in 1980 when he became the director of a not-for-profit organization in Chicago and worked in research, writing, debating, and teaching scientific evidence related to creation. As part of his work, Walt and Peggy traveled widely and met memorable people. In 1985 their work was moved to Phoenix. Walt's book, In the Beginning: Compelling Evidence for Creation and the Flood, 8th Edition, has sold over 150,000 copies. The revised and expanded 9th Edition will soon be published.
