Arthur Alpert Obituary

Arthur Alpert

4/15/1932-2/19/2023

On the 19th of February 2023 Arthur Alpert took his leave from us in Albuquerque. Brooklyn born and bred he marched through life driven to be of service to the world.

Justice for all was his calling card, and his Legacy.

Arthur's strategies were the written word, the theatre and financial generosity for just about every cause that sought to ease human suffering. He was a professional journalist, newspaper columnist, TV anchor/host/correspondent/ journalism critic (ABQ Journal Watch.com). His lifelong love of theatre moved him to training at the Berghof Acting Studio NYC. In New Mexico he volunteered to read over the radio the news of the day for those who were blind. In Albuquerque he appeared in 28 stage productions. During the Vietnam war he was "incountry"...our journalistic eye seeing the truth there and writing about it. He later produced the documentary winning a New York Emmy Award for Dong Xoai, a documentary on Vietnam, WABC-TV. His list of accomplishments goes on. A friend called his life a "Magnum Opus".

This Obit writer heard his last word, he simply said, "Lovely". I like to think he was talking about life. Arthur was buried in the same grave as his mother and sister here in Albuquerque.

A Memorial is planned at 1331 Park Avenue Condominiums on 14th street just south of Central, March 18th, 2023 on the first floor starting at 10:30am. All are Welcome!

I have know Arthur since the late `80´s and worked with him, setting up the news department at KSAF in Santa Fe, NM.

A smart, witty and urbane person who taught me a lot about the craft of news writing and presentation.

People with his background and experience won´t come again. Godspeed, Arthur, I´m sure you are starting a newsletter wherever you are.

And thank you for everything you did here.

I always waited for "Prime Time" (55 and over) to come out, every month. I did not know Mr. Alpert was in Viet Nam. I recognize Thông Tn Xã card anywhere. I was only a kid then. If i had known Mr. Alpert was in Viet Nam for a while i would have connected him to Vietnamese Senior Citizen Association.

Arthur was the producer of local newscasts at WABC-TV in New York City when I worked for him as a writer. It was hard not to learn from him because, even as deadlines to go on the air approached, he would often stand up amid our staff in the newsroom and deliver himself of a lecture -- always solid, always witty and urbane, always filled with his commitment to public- service journalism. He was easy to like, even love. I still have in my files a handout he prepared about how to write a TV news script; he loaded it with hilarious fictionalized characters that said a lot about politics in New York . . .stuff that would never get on the air, but that stuck in our brains.

The first time I saw Arthur on TV was in NYC. Then he interviewed me on TV in Santa Fe. Then we wound up as neighbors at Park Plaza. A wonderful guy who will be greatly missed.

Arthur Alpert was my very first assignment editor, taking on a high school senior to write a handful of articles for the "Prime Time" (55 and over) newspaper in 1992. He was my first professional mentor and he even attended my H.S. graduation. Rest in peace, Mr. Alpert.

I worked for Arthur, Alan and Sydney for about five years as the 'Gal Friday' around the office. I learned so much from them! I wouldn't have had a book published or done editing or had booths in trade shows without their experience and knowledge which they all cheerfully shared.
Arthur taught me as much about writing and reporting as I learned in classes at UNM - and his atrocious puns were not only legendary, but printed in his columns. Prime Time in the late 90's wasn't just a place to work, but a small close-knit family. We started the annual Senior Celebration, and covered issues and stories throughout NM. Remarkable columnists added to the news magazine, but Arthur was at the helm.
I hope they all get together regularly on the other side. We here on this side miss them very much. Laters!

I considered myself a friend of Arthur Alpert, whose acting in plays and public talks at Oasis I admired. I often saw him Congregation Albert brunches. He made a contribution to our community through his public life.
