Cody Pierce Obituary

Pierce, Cody Shane

Cody Shane Pierce, 19 years old, passed away in an unexpected drowning accident in the Animas River outside of Durango, Colorado, on June 25th. He was in Colorado working at the Tall Timbers Resort as a Skyranger. One evening after dinner, a few of the them were walking back to their cabins and decided they wanted to jump in the river to cool off. In Cody's protective manner, he said he would go first and unfortunately was overtaken by the under currant of the water. We are praying for the staff and his co-workers, as well as, his family and friends back in his home town of Albuquerque, NM. He was a 2013 graduate of Cibola High School, a Soccer Keeper for high school and club, he ran the 400 meter in Track, he was interested in Forensics and he was studying Criminology at the University of New Mexico, and was on the UNM Racquetball Team and during the school year, he worked at the UNM Campus Police Department. Recently he had received his Hot-Shot and CPR Certifications, as well as, he earned his personal harness to become a Skyranger at Tall Timbers Resort.

He will be extremely missed by his mother and father, sister and brother, grandparents, great-grandmother, uncles, aunts and cousins, roommates and many, many friends and co-workers.

In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a Memorial Fund at BBVA Compass Bank to help feed the many volunteer kayakers, rafters, hikers and search and rescue from the Sheriff's Department in Durango that are still looking for him in the Animas River.

There will be a Candlelight Vigil at the Paradise Hills Park on Monday, July 6th at 7pm. Please come and celebrate his life.

The Memorial Service will be at Faith Lutheran Church, 10000 Spain Rd NE, Albuquerque on Friday, July 17th at 4pm, reception to follow.

Hey Mr and Mrs. Pierce, I don't know if you remember me but my name is Kayla Streit, my mom is Gina and I have a little brother Erik. We knew each other as homeschoolers. Cody and I were the 'twins' since we were born a day apart. My mom just told me what happened, I'm so sorry to hear about it...I remember my mom used to go to church with you. I hope your family is doing okay, especially the two younger ones. We're praying for you all <3

To the parents of Cody--You do not know us, but I was sitting in the booth next to your table with my husband, his cousin, and his cousin's son at the Dennys restaurant in Durango on either Saturday or Sunday morning (6/27 0r 28). We bought the Durango paper to read the article about the 2 escaped convicts in New York State since that is where we are from. On the next page was the article about your son. We were discussing what a tragedy that was when you turned around and said "that's my son". We were all shocked, of course, and felt terrible for you. I felt that I should have gotten up and spoken to you, given you a hug, or done something, and regret that I didn't--but at the same time did not want to draw unwanted attention to you either. You asked for prayers that Cody would be found so that you could bring him home. That we did. I put him on our church prayer chain right then--as soon as I could stop crying myself-- and have prayed for you since. We got the paper the next day to see if he had been found and he had not. According to what I see online he still has not. My heart breaks for you. We have a daughter and 2 sons, plus 6 grandchildren. Even though my life's work was a pediatric nurse for 47 years which presented plenty of tragic situations with parents losing children, it is something you don't get "used to". It was hard to deal with every time. I don't believe it is something parents ever totally get over, and cannot imagine the depth of your grief. I am so sorry that your son't life ended so young, and I will never ever forget sitting in that restaurant hearing you say "that's my son". I am glad that I finally have the opportunity to offer our condolences and I pray that he will be found soon so that you can bring him home.
