David Steinbach Obituary

David "Dave" Steinbach

David "Dave" Steinbach went on vacation to see the redwoods of northern California and died peacefully in his sleep on Summer Solstice, June 21, 2017, at the age of 57 in Arcata, CA.

He is survived by his devoted wife Frances, and by his brothers Paul Steinbach and Peter Steinbach, and his sister-in-law Kathleen. Dave's sister Tasia White passed away in September, and his brother Tom passed away in 2000. Dave earned a PhD in mathematics at UNM, and taught and researched in a variety of places. His rare talent served the efforts of physicists in the field of hyperbolic geometry. As a certified lapidary artist, Dave also crafted cabochons and faceted gems for jewelry designs, and as a dedicated rockhound he collected opals and fossils. An accomplished hiker and climber, Dave scaled all of the fourteeners in Colorado. He was the person that you needed in the wilderness, and he helped many hikers along the way. Well-known for his penetrating wit, Dave had an uncanny ability to find the humor in any situation. He made sure we laughed when we were unsure or unhappy. He will be sorely missed.

Dave was celebrated in a gathering in the Sandia Mountains on Aug 25, 2017.
