Dennis Latta was one of my best friends growing up in Staunton, VA. We spent lots of time together, riding around in his various gas-guzzling jalopies and trying to stay out of trouble. I could go on about our adventures together, but that is a long story. For this tribute, on this day, just after the anniversary of his passing, I will share a post he made on FB a time ago that pretty well describes his outlook on life. Every time I read it, I laugh aloud and remember why I love Dennis Latta.

"Somehow, I turn 72 this weekend. That's amazing. I have never done anything in my life because it is healthy. My two favorite food groups are sugar (soft drinks, cookies) and starch (potatoes, pasta). I wouldn't eat a vegetable if you put a gun to my head. I've had five surgeries for three kinds of cancer, a heart procedure, and, most recently, a severe stroke. But I'll turn 72 tomorrow, play 18 holes on Monday, and go bowling on Tuesday. The human body apparently can endure years of deep-fat fried food, thousands of drive-through burgers, and a career with three deadlines every night. I have no idea why I have been this lucky and healthy when I've done nothing to deserve it. But I am. So to my many friends with bad backs, serious illnesses, and joints that don't allow them to move, I say -- there is still time to get a cheese whopper with bacon and mayo before they close, and don't forget the greasy fries and Coke."

Have a lot of fun memories from Happy Birthday, U.S.A. celebrations in Staunton, VA in the late 70's listening to the Statler Bros with Latta. He and my husband worked together in Roanoke,VA. Dennis and his dry humor will be missed.

Dennis was Rick (Wright)'s and my Best Man at our Wedding. Instead of going to a hotel, we spent the evening eating and drinking at Dennis' house! Boy, did we feel it the next morning! Rest In Peace, Latta. I'll miss that scratchy voice of yours!

I was lucky enough to have known Dennis. We spoke often when he was a sports writer and when he was with the sports authorize. I believe I called him a couple of months ago. Did not realize the situation with his health. Rest in peace, Dennis...you will be missed. Gary Spitzberg
