Elizabeth Matthews Obituary

Matthews, Elizabeth T.

Dr. Elizabeth T. Matthews, known to her friends as Mopsy, died from complications of a sudden cardiac arrest on January 25, 2016. Mopsy was born in New York City, spent her early childhood in Riverside, Connecticut and London, England, and went to high school in Rome, Italy. She attended Wellesley College and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Mopsy met her beloved husband Bruce Trigg at Albert Einstein College, in the Bronx, where she did her residency.

In 1983 Mopsy and Bruce moved from Manhattan to Crownpoint, New Mexico to work with the Indian Health Service, and was given the affectionate Dine nickname: "Azee'ííl'íní naa naalwol" (the doctor who is running around).

Mopsy and Bruce were married in 1985 and moved to Albuquerque where Mopsy worked for the University of New Mexico Department of Pediatrics at Carrie Tingley Hospital, and the Preschool Infant Evaluation Program. Mopsy became the Medical Director (MD) for the NM Newborn Screening Program in 2000, MD for the NM Children's Medical Services in 2003, and MD of the Family Health Bureau in 2008 until her retirement in 2012.

Since 2000, Mopsy and her family spent several years living and working in South and Southeast Asia, including teaching as a Fulbright-Nehru scholar in India.

Mopsy was a lifelong feminist and community activist, standing up for equality and dignity for all. We know she certainly would have opposed the next war had she lived long enough. One of Mopsy's last wishes was to place a Bernie Sanders sign in her yard, a request that has been posthumously fulfilled.

Mopsy was a friend, mentor and role model for many young people. She adored her husband, her children, her family, and friends, and made everyone feel incredibly loved.

Mopsy was a creative writer, an avid reader, an adventurer, an artist, a sailor, a mushroom hunter, and a grinning bundle of energy. She loved New Mexican sunsets, luminarias, and the sounds of the ocean.

Mopsy was predeceased by her mother, Helen Parker, and father, F. Scott Matthews. She is survived by her husband, Bruce Trigg; and her children Daniella and Nathaniel Matthews-Trigg. She is also survived by her sisters Meg Matthews-Herman and Sara-Grieco Matthews; her nieces Sarah Heltzel and Kyra Grieco and her nephew Ben Herman, and their families. Additionally, she is survived by many close cousins (including Jon Baldwin of Albuquerque), and her honorary daughters Manon Tardieu and Sruti Rao, and all the other young people she considered her children.

Mopsy requested that in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to the Hesperian Foundation or to the Mopsy Matthews '73 Student Scholarship Fund of Wellesley College.

Memorials are being planned for the future in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Cape Cod, Massachusetts; to be announced.

Mopsy took enormous joy in life and lived every moment to its fullest. She was an inspiration and a blessing to everyone who knew her.

As Mopsy often said, "May the rest of your lives be the best of your lives!"

Four years from your passing, Mopsey - What a joy of life you were! My first thought of you is your laughter! That wonderful laughter and joy that you brought with you. If there was an Eternal Bee Pollen of Joy, you were on it! Thank you for emmanating your joy, positivity, and compassion for so many things! What a swell of pride when our son could shadow you in India during your family's stay for your pediatric medicine work. Love, The Shuey-Blalock Family

Dear Bruce,

I am so shocked to read of Mopsy 's death today, and so terribly sorry for your loss. Mopsy was so full of life and energy, it's hard to grasp.

It was wonderful to reconnect with you both at the St Stephen's reunion in 2014, and spend the day together at Ostia Antica and the meal at the beach. I have a wonderful photo of Mopsy and me wading in the Mediterranean on my refrigerator! I've tried to contact Mopsy by email several times without success since your trip to Vietnam, and today's search resulted in her obituary. Not what I expected.

Again, my condolences on your terrible loss. You were a wonderful team.

Best

Dear Bruce, I am so touched that you called to let me know of Mopsy's passing. I am so sorry for your loss. However, I am grateful for the chance to reconnect recently with Mopsy, first in NYC when she was on the way to her writing time in Italy, and later in your home on our way to a wedding in Santa Fe. Dear Bruce,
I am so very very sorry for your and your children's loss . And I feel such a loss too though I hadn't seen Mopsy since high school. She was a special person. Dear Bruce, I was so sorry to hear of Mopsy's passing. It has taken me quite awhile to just deal with the news. Mopsy was such a beautiful person and one of the most dedicated individuals that I ever knew at the Department of Health. We had so much fun working together. I will always remember her bright smile and blythe spirit. I loved all of her stories of travel in India, hunting for mushrooms in the Santa Fe forest and painting oils. She is already missed so much. Take care of your sweet family and know that you are in our prayers. Love, Jane Peacock

My memories of Dr. Matthews are very special. She was so down to earth and sweet and cared very deeply for children and youth who have special health care needs. When we had the Children's Medical Services FIT program, she would call and ask about a certain child and even ask how the whole family was doing. She genuinely cared for them. Dr. Matthews would also say "take care of yourself" My prayers are with her family. Sincerely, Susana V. Castillo.

Mopsey Matthews - Thank you for the rays of sunshine and laughter and experiences that you brought to all of us. Everything that you did was a trip, a journey, and you enhanced every journey with all the fun things along the way. You lightened, inspired, motivated and mentored, and have left so much to all of us.
