Ernest Hazelwood Obituary

Hazelwood, Ernest Ray

Ernest Ray Hazelwood was born February 25, 1927 near Sadler, Grayson County, Texas to Willie C. Hazelwood and Zora Inez (Souther) Hazelwood. He was the youngest of three boys.

He died Friday, October 21, 2016 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

He lived in and around Sherman, Texas until he was 15 years old when he moved to Bishop, California. After he completed his Junior year of high school, in June 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He continued his Naval service until July 1973 at which time he retired as a Lieutenant. His Naval career afforded an opportunity to serve on nine ships during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. His principal job was Navigator. He also served on shore duty in Naval Recruiting and Career Counseling in the U.S. and Staff Duty overseas. His medals include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Good Conduct (4 awards) and nine additional campaign awards covering WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Blockade.

After retirement he returned to Albuquerque and became active in the Masonic Fraternity. He was a 60 year Mason and served as Master of three Lodges, He was District Deputy Grand Master in 1979 and 1980 and in 1989 he was Grand Master of Masons in New Mexico. He was a Charter member of five Lodges in New Mexico and served as Master of two of those. Ernie was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and member of York Rite, Shrine, National Sojourners, Red Cross of Constantine, Rosicrucian, Royal Order of Scotland and a Life member of the American Legion and National Rifle Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Carl and Claude Hazelwood.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bean Hazelwood of Edgewood, NM. He has two daughters from his previous marriage, Carol Ann Kulokowski and Debbie Hazelwood Woolford of Virginia Beach, VA; one grandson, Mark J. Marcus and wife, Ann, and one great-granddaughter, Carly Marcus of Virginia Beach, VA.

Ernie liked to tell stories and his ongoing New Year's resolution was to leave a person with a smile on their face, which he tried to always do. Having joined the Navy before graduation from high school he had a strong desire to get his high school diploma. He attained this wish after sixty years in September 2005 receiving his diploma from Bishop Union High School in his class' sixtieth reunion.

His remains have been transported to Portland, OR for burial in the Willamette National Cemetery with Masonic services and Military honors. Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 4, 2016, 11:30 a.m. at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 1181 SE Mt. Scott Blvd, Portland, OR 97086. A Graveside Service will follow 12:30 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd , Portland, OR 97086. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Albuquerque, NM.

Ernie was a great man (and sailor). He was my friend, my mentor, best friend and Lodge Brother. His help was the most important thing in our obtaining our Masonic Charter in Timberon, New Mexico , in 1991. I was the charter Master because of his teaching and helping me learn New Mexico work in Masonry. If you ever needed a friend to brighten your day - it was Ernie. Dorothy, your tremendous loss is also a loss to the Masonic Fraternity and all of his friends, which were many.. I only learned of his death yesterday. God bless you, Dorothy.

Ernie, you were such a wonderful man. Thoughtful, loving, humorous, story-telling, heart-centered, smiling, hard-working, energetic. Words can't possibly describe how you showed up in your life. You will be missed in so many ways. Your love and care of Dorothy is what brought us together. May you enjoy your after-life, as we know you will continue to look out for her from wherever you are.
Much Love, Jim & Jo

So sorry to hear of Red's passing. I have some of the greatest memories of Red and Dorothy's visits. My Dad Bobbie Hazelwood always loved his visits with Red. He always had us laughing as he told us so many stories. Loved him coming down to the Dairy barn while we were working. Prayers for you Dorothy and family and also wanted you to know myyoungest son is iin the Navy now and stationed on Whidbey Island, WA.

Ernie was a friend and shipmate in Vietnam. What a great storyteller and inspiration to all that knew him. His quick wit and common sense approach served him and others very well. His sense of humor, outgoing personality and love of life will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Daddy,
I know that you are in the devine presence of our glorious Lord, but I miss you!
I know that you will be brightest shining star in the Celestial Heavens of the Universe. I felt the Earth shake when you left this plane. I know that you will be looking after Debbie, Mark, Carly, and me, and all the people that you loved.
From the moment you were born to the moment of passing - what you did with this "dash in-between" in your life - is greater than anyone I have personally known. You touched so many lives, and made them smile. I am so proud to be your daughter.

With my eternal love - until we meet again.
Rest in love and beauty...
