Ethel Goebel Obituary

Ethel E. Lucore Goebel

Ethel Eileen Lucore Goebel,

loving wife, proud mother and dedicated teacher passed away June 28, 2018 at home.

She was 56 years old.

She suffered from a cruel neurological disease, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), which stole her movement, but not her spirit or her soul. She will be forever remembered for her effervescent smile and her remarkable sense of humor. Every person who crossed her path was a potential friend in her eyes. She was a great listener and sharing funny stories was her strength. We will miss the musical sound of her laughter.

Born in Colorado to Wilbur Lucore and Joyce Skipton Lucore, Ethel was the youngest of their four daughters. She graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, completed a Master's Degree in Education from University of New Mexico and was very proud to earn her National Board Certification for teaching.

Ethel embraced motherhood and was most proud of her children, Alex and Audrey Tipping. They were always first and foremost in her life. She worked at making memories by taking many family vacations, planning family game nights and celebrating holidays with little gifts. She loved strengthening relationships by playing games. Her goal wasn't to win, but to laugh and enjoy the friends and family around her.

In 2007 Ethel married the love of her life, Russ Goebel.

Though their years together were too short, they enjoyed every day. Immersing themselves in travel, they visited Europe several times with family and friends, and enjoyed umbrella drinks in both Hawaii and The

Caribbean. She never passed up a Gelato in Italy or a pastry in France.

So many young lives were affected by Ethel's enthusiastic teaching. Besides teaching her students the subject matter she taught them kindness and empathy. She always started the school year by reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. She gave away many copies of the book and suggested everyone read it.

As a teacher, she loved nothing more than having big projects to teach children in several areas of study. Those projects were so much fun the students were oblivious to the fact they were learning along the way. She treated every student, even the challenging ones, with respect and kindness.

Ethel is survived by her loving husband, Russ, her two children Alex and Audrey, her three older sisters and brother in laws, and many, many friends. Our hearts ache with the loss of someone we loved so much.

Such a coincidence that I stumbled upon this site. Mrs. Goebel was my 5th-grade teacher. I am now a junior in high school. She was so sweet. One of my memories of her was how she always complimented a pair of pink shoes I would wear. Thanks for being a great teacher.

I only met you once when Russ gave me a ride to the airport last year. In just those short minutes I knew you were a special lady. God bless your family and friend you are truest missed. mj

Unfortunately, I did not meet Ethel until 2008. As a special education teacher, I was instantly impressed by Ethel's compassion and consideration of all students, regardless of their academic abilities. In the following years I came to consider Ethel a teacher to emulate and often found myself thinking what would Ethel do. Through my 20 years of teaching Ethel was the teacher I admired most and I always enjoyed the time we spent in the classroom together.
I spent quite a bit of time with her over the years since her first diagnosis of Parkinson's and later MSA. Ethel taught me a lot about dying, about the need for right to die laws, about accepting each new normal as her disease progressed and robbed her of more and more, and about valuing time with friends and family. But mostly Ethel taught me about how to live. Ethel was an incredible example of living not so much to be understood but to understand others and not so much to be loved as to love others. My live is so enriched by her friendship and I honor her by trying to take what she has given me and try to touch others in the same way she touched me.
You are a light in my life Ethel.

As you remember your love one, as God heals your broken hearts (Psalm 147:3), may your treasured memories continue to bring you peace, comfort, and strength to endure.

It was a privilege to know Ethel. She was one of the kindest women I have ever met. She did her best to stay upbeat as her disease progressed and always greeted everyone with a smile. The world could use a lot more people like Ethel. She was a shining light and she will be missed.

Ethel was one of the kindest and most encouraging women I have known. She brightened a room just by walking into it and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
