Glen Effertz Obituary

Glen Theodore Effertz

Glen Theodore Effertz, age 73, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away peacefully on April 28th, 2023.

Glen was born on the south side of Chicago, IL on November 10th, 1949 to Theodore John Effertz, Jr. and E. Lou Effertz (née Flack). Glen graduated from Fenger High School in 1967. He received his Associate of Arts degree from Thornton Community College in 1970, a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1973 and dual Master's Degrees in Business Administration and Latin American Studies from UNM in 1979. Glen married Melinda García on December 20th, 1974, in Albuquerque. He fell in love with New Mexico as a Boy Scout when he went to Philmont Scout Ranch. When he moved to Albuquerque to go to UNM, he chose to live in Barelas in order to learn Spanish. This skill endeared him to his mother-in-law, who thought the sun rose and set on him.

Glen had an adept mind, especially for numbers and trivia, which served him well in a long career in finance. This included a joint accounting & marketing position created especially for him at Warner Elektra Atlantic records in Los Angeles in the 1980s and early 1990s. When the family returned to New Mexico in 1992 he held a number of positions at UNM including at the School of Engineering, the College of Nursing and the Center for Telehealth. His talent with trivia led him to captain the championship teams for Trivial Pursuits in company wide tournaments at WEA in 1990- 91. He was always with a book on history or philosophy, novels about WW2, and dense novels only English majors really like.

Glen was an avowed feminist and advocate. He increased female and POC representation on the staff of every place he worked. This also included supporting his wife's success at every level. When Melinda was ready to drop out of her doctoral program, Glen encouraged her to continue, telling her that he wasn't ready to have suffered all that time for nothing.

Glen loved all kinds of music, especially Jazz music, and was a talented Jazz singer. Glen performed with local Jazz groups around Albuquerque, including a number of performances at the Outpost Performance Space.

A loving husband, father, and brother, Glen is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Dr. Melinda García, his son, Joaquín Effertz, and his brother, Gordon Effertz as well as a large network of loving friends and extended family and his dog Mongo. His family will hold a Celebration of Life later this year.
