Harriet Shalit Abrams passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, in Davie, Florida, where she was a resident at Oakmonte Assisted Living. Harriet was the last surviving sibling of Joslyn Schwartz, Sharon Rubenstein, and Barry Shalit.
Harriet was born on August 12, 1932, to Doris Bromberg and Samuel Shalit of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She spent most of her youth living with her family on Fourth Street in downtown Albuquerque. As a young adult, Harriet attended the University of New Mexico, where she completed her BA in Music Education. She also received a full scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York. After completing her studies, she returned to Albuquerque, where she eventually met her future husband, Norman Abrams, a prominent dentist from New Rochelle, New York. Harriet later moved to New Rochelle, continuing her singing career in New York City, where she performed at the Metropolitan Opera Theatre.
After having her first daughter, Bettina Abrams, Harriet began her next career as a real estate agent in Larchmont, New York, specializing in high-end homes. The growing family eventually moved to Scarsdale, where Harriet and Norman raised their daughters, Bettina and Babette Abrams. Harriet continued to sell homes while also singing opera locally.
In the early 1970s, Harriet returned to school and earned her degree as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. She went on to work for Nestlé and Blythedale Children's Hospital, beginning a third meaningful chapter of her professional life.
In the mid-1980s, Norman and Harriet moved to Boca Raton, where Norman pursued a second career as a prolific sculptor. During this time, Harriet cherished spending time with her two granddaughters, Shelby Nicole and Kylie Elisabeth.
After Norman's passing in 1996, and following several years of mourning, Harriet embraced travel and embarked on yet another chapterthis time as a knowledgeable financial investor. She studied the stock market closely with her siblings and successfully exceeded the S&P 500 for multiple years, helping secure generational wealth for her family.
Harriet's positive outlook on life and her remarkable resilience left a deep impression on everyone who knew her. Her ability to connect with friends and family through laughter and humor was one of her greatest gifts. Her love for simplicity, nature, adventure, and thoughtful conversation will always be remembered. Harriet also had a multitude of eclectic habits and curiositiessuch as climbing trees and collecting frogsthat made her uniquely unforgettable.
She educated her family in countless ways: politics and the royal family, wise investing, nutrition, the joy of good food and strong cocktails, the importance of quality time, and a lifelong appreciation for theater, ballet, opera, and the arts.
A life beautifully lived.
Rest in peace, Grandma Bubby, my beautiful Mamacita. You will be forever missed.
