Harriet Bull Obituary

Harriet Svirsky Kraye Bull

Harriet Svirsky Kraye Bull, whose exuberance touched the lives of so many people, passed away at age 70 on November 16, 2018 in Victoria, BC, Canada. The daughter of Adeline and Herman Svirsky, Harriet grew up in Kingston, NY. She earned a BA degree from George Washington University in Washington D.C. and then moved to Los Angeles, CA where she built a successful career as a marketing executive specializing in creating catalogs for department stores around the country.

In 1990, Harriet relocated to Albuquerque, NM initially working as a realtor for the Vaughn Company. She then became Executive Director of People Living Through Cancer before holding a variety of leadership positions in marketing and development with the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, and the UNM Health Sciences College of Pharmacy. Upon retiring, she moved to Scottsdale, AZ and then Canada with her husband Ken, a native of Victoria, BC.

Throughout her life, Harriet devoted herself to community service and philanthropy. She served on numerous boards, including Sojourn (for battered women) in L.A., the Mary Floyd Haworth Foundation and Casa Vieja in Albuquerque, and the Victoria Society for Humanistic Judaism in Victoria. Even while battling her own four-year history of bladder cancer, she continued volunteer work until she was hospitalized. Her compassion, generosity, and vitality will be immeasurably missed by family, friends, and colleagues.

Harriet is survived by her beloved husband of fifteen years, Ken Bull; her step-son Jeffrey Bull and his wife Janice of Denver CO; her step-son Christopher Bull and his wife Paula of Danville CA; her step-daughter Kegan Ahern and her husband Jon of Denver CO; eight grandchildren; her sister, Helene Wagner of Los Angeles; her sister-in-law, Barbara Jefferies of Victoria, B.C.; and her cherished dog, Winston.

One of the things she was most proud of was her family's pharmacy background, and she was honored to serve as Director of Development for UNM's College of Pharmacy from 2008 to 2013. With her commitment to philanthropy and her admiration of the Pharmacy students, she created the scholarship fund as an everlasting family legacy. You can join us in honoring Harriet by contributing to her legacy. Checks can be sent to the UNM Foundation or donations made online at

Harriet, your spirit, generosity, warmth, and love are irreplaceable and will be sorely missed. You were a tremendous friend and though not technically our "cousin," you were indeed much more than a relative. The Thanksgiving celebrations our families shared were the best times and are fondly remembered. Our deepest sympathy to Helene and Ken.

I remember our first meeting at PLTC. You had so much energy. You wanted to change the cancer experience. When you became a member of the Brd of Dir for Casa Esperanza you continued your dream. Soon you were President and still hoped to change the journey. It was hard work. You fought a strong fight. I remember your wedding to Ken. You were so happy. You are part of my story now.
