Helen Dayan Obituary

Helen Manulita Dayan

(Chavez Duran)

Helen Manulita Dayan (Chavez Duran), of Grants NM, a beloved member of the community, peacefully left this world on January 9, 2024, at the age of 86. She was born in Grants, New Mexico, in June of 1937, to Pantaleon Chavez and Merenciana Blea-Chavez.

Helen's life was defined by the profound love she had for her family. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Eddie Duran-Dayan, and their son Joseph Anthony. Her parents, Pantaleon and Merenciana, as well as her sisters and brothers: Pona Trujillo, Chona Mirabal, Lou McBride, Tillie Padilla, and her brothers Arnold Chavez, Eddie Chavez, and Ben Chavez.

She is survived by her two sisters Delene Baca and Corrine Chavez-Franco, who will deeply miss her presence in their lives. Helen is also survived by her daughters Jackie Rigg, Jeanette Youngquist, and her son Nick "Nico" Dayan. Helen's many grandchildren and great-grandchildren will carry her memory in their hearts forever.

Throughout her life, Helen was an active and devoted member of St. Vivians Catholic Church in Milan, where she served as a eucharistic minister. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, enabling her to be a source of comfort and strength to those around her. Helen's compassion and dedication extended beyond her church; she also faithfully served over 20 years for the NM department of labor, as well as a Valencia County Magistrate Judge, several years as a school board member and trustee for the Village of Milan. Her commitment to justice and education made a lasting impact on the community she loved.

Helen valued the relationships she formed with others and held her close friends and neighbors dear to her heart. She shared a special bond with Mary Lundstrom and Germain Egan, who offered unwavering support and companionship in good times and challenging times. Helen deeply mourned the loss of her close friend Juanita Urioste when she passed away a few years ago.

Helen touched the lives of many with her kindness, compassion, and dedication to serving others. Her memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know her. As we bid our final goodbyes, let us cherish the legacy she leaves behind and honor her life by embracing the values she held dear.
