Herman Halper Obituary

Herman Joseph Halper

Beloved Father - Korean War Veteran - Dedicated Air Traffic Controller, It is with profound love and sadness that we announce the passing of Herman Joseph Halper, who departed this life peacefully on July 6, 2025, at the age of 93.

Born in Chicago on January 12, 1932, Herman was a man of deep conviction, unwavering honesty, and tireless dedication. A proud veteran of the Korean War, Herman served his country with honor before embarking on a distinguished 30-year career as an air traffic controller a role that demanded precision, composure, and exceptional responsibility, all of which he carried with quiet excellence.

Though he never pursued a college degree himself, Herman strongly believed in the power of education. He worked hard to ensure that his children had the opportunity to pursue higher learning and instilled in them the values of perseverance, integrity, and lifelong curiosity.

Herman was known not only for his strong work ethic, but also for his generosity. Charitable by nature, he gave to others without hesitation be it time or resources. He lived his life guided by principles, never wavering in his beliefs, and always standing up for what he felt was right.

Herman was married to the love of his life, Madeline, for 63 years. Their marriage was built on mutual respect, love, and a shared commitment to family. Together they created a home filled with unconditional support, caring, and discipline. Among his many joys, Herman had a special place in his heart for the holidays. Whether it was stringing lights, cooking posole, or handing out candy, he treasured every chance to bring family together.

He is survived by his children, Robert J. Halper of Cedar Park, TX, Cindy M. Locklin (Jim) of Albuquerque, and Cathy S. Halper of Albuquerque; and grandson, Christopher Martinez of Brooklyn, NY, all of whom carry forward his legacy of strength, kindness, and resilience. He was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline; brothers, John and Charles; and sister, Rose.

A private family memorial service to honor Herman's life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the veterans' organization of your choice in Herman's memory.

Herman's life was a testament to the quiet power of integrity and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

The fondest memory we have is Christmas Eve & Uncle Herm's famous Posole. What a special holiday celebration Herm & Madeline hosted every year. We looked forward to seeing family incl. Aunts, Uncles, & Cousins. Our Christmas Card always had a note saying "see you at 6:30 for posole". We will Cherish those memories!! Rest in Peace Uncle Herm
