Horace Wesley Poteet



Horace Wesley (Wes) Poteet, age 64, made the transition from this life to the next on August 28th, 2021 in Longmont Colorado.

Wesley is preceded in death by his parents Horace Monroe Poteet in 2011 and Joy Hook Poteet in 2019. Wesley is survived by three younger brothers: Thomas Monroe Poteet of Colorado Springs, CO; William Peter Poteet with wife Bonnie Dee and sons Arlie Dee of Albuquerque, NM and Gordon Erick with wife Michelle Lynn and sons Erick Alexander and Russell William of San Antonio, TX; and Jonathan Daniel Hook Poteet with wife Clare Yvonne Salthouse and son Caleb Hook of Roseburg, OR.

Wes is also survived by numerous friends and business associates he kept up with throughout his life leaving lasting impressions and treasured memories.

Wes was the 1st born of 4 sons, a band of brothers. His family lived in a small stucco home his parents bought in 1958 and which they enlarged and improved making it a Poteet home base until its recent sale in 2021. Wes went to Del Norte High School in Albuquerque, NM where he was Cadet Commander for JROTC. Wes was also an Eagle Scout; worked as an ice cream jerk at Soda Straw; had a great variety of interests including World War II aircraft and flying; and he started a life-long love of singing in church and high school choirs and with Barbershop Quartets. Wes attended college at Eastern New Mexico University where he studied Accounting and found his love of computers.

Wes was a career IT professional, specializing in mainframe systems support, and he spent more than 25 years working for IBM, before retiring in November 2016. His career spanned analysis, programming, technical support and team leadership roles, including his role as a Technical Solution Architect within the IBM Managed Services organization, where Wes was responsible for the mainframe technical design and solution/cost development for IBM client engagements. While in this role, Wes took great pride in giving back to his peers. Wes was well respected not only for his wide technical knowledge and expertise but also for his passion for developing methods for efficiencies, and his willingness to help anyone who asked.

After retiring from IBM, Wes spent his later years volunteering at a local radio station, going to aircraft shows, singing in local chorales, meeting friends for lunch or conversation, and exploring new thoughts and ideas including meta-physics.

Wes' spiritual life was one of exploration. He enjoyed discussing the metaphysical and learning how others approached such topics. Attending a variety of meet-up groups on tarot, and other similar subjects, he found kindred spirits in new friends. He learned he was an excellent tarot reader and even attended fairs and visited candle shops to do readings for people. Wes had a very intuitive understanding of card reading which made him exceptionally accurate. Discovering this talent later in life gave him a newfound joy and inspiration after he retired.

Wes liked to understand how things work and fix problems to make the world a better place. Some might consider him over-analytical, but he often found that the simple answer wasn't the accurate answer. He had a great sense of humor and loved meeting new people and talking about everything from religion to politics to technology. He had strong and sometimes unconventional opinions but was superb at listening to others, presenting his side of things, and being open-minded and compassionate.

Wes was a brother, friend, and companion and continues in spirit within all those that know and love him. Wes changed and continues to change the world into a better place!

A Memorial Reception celebration of life will be held Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 12:00 pm at Carroll-Lewellen Funeral & Cremation Services in Longmont, Colorado.
