Irene Garden Obituary

Irene Ann Garden

Irene Ann Garden was born in Brooklyn, NY, in the spring of 1944. She died peacefully from complications of breast cancer, surrounded by the love of family and friends, in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, New Mexico, on 6/8/2025, where she had lived off and on for over 5 decades. Irene was always uniquely herself.

A beautiful, generous, giving soul, she was an adoring mother to Sheufa Garden, a.k.a. Jason, stepmother to Sophie (Caleb Chavez) and Juanka Contreras, godmother of Rita Pie Daniels, loving cousin of Amy (children Nina, Paul, and Neil, partner Stan), and friend to many.

She was an intrepid midwife, animal whisperer, nature lover (especially hummingbirds), photographer, dancer and singer, sound maker, music lover, linguist, creative storyteller, and people watcher. She advocated for women's health care in the many communities she worked in. Irene loved life and appreciated everything it had to offer except injustice, war, inequality (both large and small), and poverty, which she fought against. Her spirit will be with us forever.

A celebration of life and memorial will be held on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, 4 pm at the Bodhi Manda Zen Center in Jemez Springs, NM. To join virtually, please email [email protected] in advance to receive a link. To leave a remembrance, or to RSVP if you plan to attend in person, visit
