Marilyn Sundt Obituary

Sundt, Marilyn E.

Marilyn E. Sundt was born May 27, 1950 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Bill and Dolores Sundt. She was preceded in death by her father Bill. She is survived by her loving husband of 25 years, Andy Mirdik of Aurora, CO; her son Christopher Graham of Colorado Springs; and her mother Dolores of Albuquerque. She was blessed with many siblings including her brothers Bill Sundt of Seattle, Paul Sundt and wife Nancy of Rio Rancho, Dan Sundt and wife Michelle of Farmington, David Sundt of Albuquerque; and sister Laura Pierce and husband Guy Pierce of Albuquerque. She is also survived by three stepsons and their families, and many nieces and nephews.

She graduated from Del Norte High School in Albuquerque, NM in 1968 and received a BA degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972. She worked for various advertising and printing companies as a customer service rep.

Prior to a serious lung infection in 1995 she was an avid hiker, reaching the summits of twenty 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado. In addition she was a cross-country and downhill skier. She loved yoga and gardening. After recovering from the initial lung infection she turned her interests toward photography, journaling, and the arts and traveling the country with Andy in their little RV.

In the years following she had a series of recurring lung infections which necessitated a double lung transplant in 2011, but through it all she maintained a positive outlook and even resumed yoga and traveling.

Marilyn passed away peacefully with Andy and family by her side on February 5, 2016.

Although she is gone from this earth she will live in our hearts forever.

I just recently saw a picture taken of you, me and Edna Fiore at some conference, probably in Denver because I'm wearing O2 as well. Edna died in October of 2021, but I suspect you know that already and are chasing each other around somewhere like a couple of kids. It was always such a treat to get to go to Denver for ATS, even though I had to use O2 there because I could count on Edna to make sure I had LOX and a roommate at the hotel and we got to have lunch with you at least once! I'm not sorry you've missed the whole COVID thing, but I know I would have enjoyed your acerbic comments and funny perspectives. It would have added some much needed humor to the situation. You are very much missed!

It's hard to believe that it was five years ago that you slipped away from us. During this last year, when it's been so difficult for people with COPD, I've thought of you often, and truly missed your sense of humor. Every once in awhile there would be something particularly clever and I'd think, "That's something Quibble would have sent me!" We miss you and know that you live on in our memories.

One final word to my dearest Marilyn. I am so grateful, and happy for the wonderful service on March 1st, 2016. I want to thank everyone who made this all possible. Way too many to mention, but especially Fr. Marty Lally, who presided over the mass, many comments of how so many felt welcomed no matter what religion or none. God bless all our friends and family. HYH my Marilyn/Quibble.

I worked with Marilyn at both Frederic Printing and Communigraphics. Although I didn't know Marilyn very well personally, I distinctly remember her very witty and dry sense of humor.
Deepest condolences to the Sundt Family.

Marilyn and I were friends for years. We shared a love of reading, tea, animals, art, the Botanic Gardens and theater. We worked in the printing industry but usually not at the same place until we were both at Communigraphics in the late 1990s. There, we shared space in a pretty small cubicle. We laughed, complained and laughed some more.
Watching Marilyn live through chronic illness for the last 20 years was an inspiration. She got up to go to yoga or PR or out for tea on days when she could barely catch her breath. She lived every day to its fullest.
I will miss her and remember her courage, her humor and her friendship for the rest of my life.
Be at peace, my friend.

Marilyn and I have been friends since we were 7 years old. I gave her the nickname "Quibble" when we were in 9th grade, and she quickly adopted it as her "nom de plume". We exchanged daily letters when we were in college and shared the challenges of motherhood when our sons were born. She has always been there for me and I can't believe she is gone. I will miss you always, Marilyn: I loved your intelligence, artistic creativity, love of frogs, and dry wit.
My husband and I had the privilege of spending precious time with her during our visit in late January, when we got to say goodbye. Our thanks to Andy for our time with her, and may God bless you, Christopher, and the Sundt family.

Marilyn's sense of humor was second to none. We loved her stories and pictures about all her trips. We loved her positivity and thoughtfulness in everything she did. She will truly be a missed part of our transplant family.

Dear Sundt family,
Marilyn was my dear friend in junior high and high school days, as well as St. John's MYF. Several times I have tried to locate her and left phone messages at her mom's house with greetings. Though we had not seen one another for many years, it is amazing how parallel our interests have been. My love and prayers are with all the families and we will remember her with joy and gratitude.

Andy, I just heard this news today and will have you in my prayers. Just take one day at a time and hold on to God's hand...God will help you as He is helping me. It was more than a pleasurer to know Marilyn and you. So Sorry and my heart aches for you. We have to remember with Jesus comes again in the sky that we'll both meet our love one in the air. What a BLESED DAY THAT WILL BE.

We feel the sorrows of our friend Andy. No husband could be as loyal to Marilyn's and her illness as Andy. We are so sorry for Andy's loss and wish him our best for his future.

Marilyn was very smart, witty, with a dry humor that always made me smile or laugh. After my surgery, I got many cards from Marilyn and Andy. Those cards were always funny. Here I was with chest tubes, and Marilyn sends cards to make me laugh. Smiles and laughter are good things! I do miss Marilyn.

Marilyn was truly an inspiration. She was a great friend. She and Andy were so supportive and kind during years of my own illness. When I was waiting for surgery, she graciously compiled and shared a photo journal of her own medical journey. I learned so much from that, it was a huge help when I also had the same surgery. I knew what to expect because of her generous sharing. Also, her example of diligence and endurance helped me to do all I needed to do to prepare for the surgery and to recover from it. Marilyn was a treasured friend and a very special person. Her encouragement and helpfulness touched me deeply. Marilyn was brilliant, a very talented writer, and I enjoyed her email journals. Marilyn was a dear friend I will hold in my heart forever.

I'm surely going to miss you Quibble for many reasons. Two of which were your courage facing all the hardships of having such a debilitating disease such as COPD and your wonderful journals and photography of your travels with Andy. I never met you in person but always sensed that you were a very special person.
Breathe easy now. My condolences to your mother, Andy and your son and family.

I looked forwarded to receiving Marilyn's travel journals. Her descriptive words and beautiful pictures made me feel like I was having a personal guided tour. She was most definitely an example of a gracious and positive woman despite her health issues. Rest in peace ❤

Quibble, thanks for the years of inspiration and exercise we enjoyed together. I was always chasing you on the treadmill, and never caught up with you. I'm going to continue to chase you for a long time to come, but I'll miss seeing you. I will surely miss your sense of humor and the grace with which you managed your COPD.
