Matthew was born December 18, 1968, in Barberton, Ohio. After graduating from Wadsworth (OH) High School in 1987, Matt enrolled at Kent State University in their nationally acclaimed aeronautics/flight technology program. While attending Kent, Matt worked four years for the campus security service, which enabled him to graduate debt free with a bachelor of science degree in 1991. Matt also served as a certified flight instructor during his last three semesters. Following graduation, Matt built on his security background in taking a job as a police officer for the city of Wyoming, Ohio. He was a proud graduate of the Ohio State Police Academy and served the community of Wyoming for eight years. His yearning to return to his true passion as a pilot was finally realized in 1999 when Matt accepted a position as a freight pilot flying for Airnet Systems of Columbus, Ohio. Eighteen months later he moved on to flying passengers for Comair, a subsidiary of Delta Airlines, based in Cincinnati. He eventually attained the rank of captain of a crew based at JFK International Airport in New York City. Another life-long passion of Matt's was "America's team," the Dallas Cowboys. While working for Airnet, Matt accepted a transfer to the Dallas area, where he resided since September 1999. In 2011 he was hired by Southwest Airlines, which enabled him to be based at Love Field, a 20-minute drive from his home.

An avid world traveler, Matt visited all six of the inhabited continents. He was also a certified scuba diver, a fourth-degree black belt in tae kwan do, and an accomplished photographer.

The family wishes to thank the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association and the Southwest Airlines Inflight Association for their incredible support following Matt's passing.

Matt is survived by his mother, Ellen Louis-Maubert of San Diego, CA; his father, Paul Smeller and his wife, Peggy of Albuquerque, NM; his brother, Carl Smeller, his wife, Michelle, and their son, Tristan, of Fort Worth, TX; and his sister Christina Joy of Albuquerque. Foremost, he is survived by his fiancee Natasha Heidlage, a Southwest flight attendant and registered nurse, who lovingly and faithfully cared for Matt in his struggles with the complications of West Nile virus.

Seven months ago, you went home to be with the Lord, and all of the other loved ones who have crossed over. I miss you, and love you, SO much...and will until we meet again. I know that we WILL meet again...I get signs often that everything is, and will be, okay. You were the one. You were my soulmate. It took me 35 years to find you, but I did...and am forever grateful. I could be bitter that our future was taken from us, and while I am devastated, I am grateful that I had seven beautiful years with you. We lived more in that seven years than many do in an entire lifetime. I will hold that forever, safely, in my heart. My family, your family, and my/our friends, have been here for me. They have been a wonderful presence, and support system, in my life...and I am grateful. I couldn't have done it without everyone. I love you more and more as each day passes, and can't wait to see you again. I will continue to live my life here, travel, try to be happy, and continue to do God's work...I know that's what you would want for me. However, when my time is up, I will be sprinting to those gates to see you, and all of my loved ones again ;). I love you more....

Matt was a part of our WNV support group for such a short time - his positive attitude and support of others touched me. Even though I never met him I still feel his loss - I will always have him, his family and his lovely fiance Natasha Heidlage in my prayers. RIP Matt, the world is a colder, darker place without you in it

Matt was fine pilot, and great person to work with. Flew with him many times at Southwest Airlines. He will be missed greatly. Matt, go with Gods speed!

Matt was the kid who was always kind to me when everybody else felt it was okay to be unkind. He will always have a special place in my heart for that because it takes a special person to stand up for what you believe when it is against public stance. Thank you Matt...
