Max Madrid Obituary

Max R. Madrid

Madrid, Max R., age 93, passed peacefully at his home in Albuquerque on September 18, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 21,1928, in La Junta, CO, to Nieva and Diego Madrid. A devout Catholic, he met the love of his life, Janette, at a church choir practice. An accomplished musician, Max started his career playing in the Army band. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Conducting from the University of Texas at Austin, and established music programs at community colleges in Neosho, MO, and Littleton, CO, before moving his family to Albuquerque in 1972 to teach and conduct the orchestra at the University of New Mexico. His crowning achievement at UNM was directing Leonard Bernstein's Mass at Popejoy Hall in 1973. Although he excelled in his career, Max's greatest passion was his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Janette, and was overjoyed to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary this past August. He loved holding his "babies" and watching them play. He is survived by his wife Janette, and their children: Michele Madrid, Maria Ebell, Andris Madrid (wife Rachel), Analisa Martin (husband Paul), and daughter-in-law Cyndi Madrid; grandchildren Savanah Madrid (partner Casey Hungate), Cassandra Madrid, Alexandria Salazar (husband Michael), Estevan Madrid, Max and Isabella Madrid, Antonio Ebell (wife Aspen), Jasmine Gray (husband Daulton), Samantha Sena, and Elise and Gabriela Martin; great-grandchildren Isseah, Damian, Neveah, Adalaida, Jeremiah, and Troy; sisters Dora Viña, Edna Davidson, Evelyn Sanchez (husband Dave), Yvonne Madrid; brother George Madrid; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Max J. Madrid, and son-in-law, Anthony Ebell. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday, October 11, 2021, at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5311 Phoenix Avenue NE, in Albuquerque. Interment will immediately follow at Gates of Heaven Cemetery, 7999 Wyoming NE. Please join us in celebrating Max by visiting our online guestbook at www.neptunesociety.com.
