Michael Bauer Obituary
Dr. Michael Bauer, 44, compassionate father and friend as well as a gifted physician who loved poetry and nature, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2017. Michael was known for his ability to warmly welcome any person into a conversation whether he had known them for two minutes or 20 years. He could make anyone smile. Michael is survived by the love of his life, Dr. Andrea Sherwood, and his children, Eli and Ava Bauer. He is also survived by his mother, Linda Bauer; brother, William Bauer and sisters, Michele Bean and Jeanne Bauer. He leaves many cherished aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held Saturday, July 1, 2017 with a welcome at 11:00 a.m. and a service at 11:30 a.m. at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel. A reception will follow at the University Club on campus from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Michael I think of you everyday. So much has been happening that you of course would be on top of. The world is a mess . A friend of yours from a time in one of your travels has reached out. He said you were one of the most influential people he ever met. He also stated he talks about you often to others. He was not aware of your passing until recently. You are so loved and missed. I met Mike during the summer of 1994 in Burlington, Iowa. He was auditing an art history class I was taking at a community college there. We became good friends pretty fast and hung out a lot that summer. It was great getting to know him. I tried looking him up a few years ago but I wasn’t able to find him. I’ve just learned of his passing. My condolences to his family and all that we’re lucky enough to know him. God speed Mike.

Thinking of you brother, everyday all day until I sleep and then sometimes ypu speak to me as I sleep. Dear Bauer Family & Friends,
I only learned recently of Dr. Bauers passing. I am saddened by the news and my heart goes out to you. I did not know Dr. Bauer well. I met him only once, but on that occasion he and Dr. Topsky probably saved my life. My wife and I found their clinic just by accident. I was in bad shape from severe dehydration and altitude sickness. They got me stabilized and then on my way to the ER. I knew I was in good hands and that I would be OK. He was a thoughtful and kind man. The world is lessened by loss.

I just found out about Mike's passing. I knew Mike back in his BC days and he was just the best dude. He was kind, thoughtful, loyal and always with an interesting perspective. He stayed with my family in Chicago a few times and he fit right in. To all of his friends, but particularly his wife, children, mom and siblings, I am so sorry. There are no words. I am a better person for having known Mike.

Words cannot describe how much I love my brother and miss him so so much. Michael was my everything for family for me. Never ever did i have a negative experience w him. No arguments always good vibes...he was a great kid, always following me and my bf Lisa so many fun stories. Now hes up w Lisa in Heaven and she can now flash him freely. Inside joke. The passing of Mike this summer has reminded me to not forget that our time here is no more than a blip. What we do in this short blip of time afforded us is both significant and nothing. The many childhood days spent with Mike discovering the world, later testing our limits, and then living our dreams were and are important. Yet, in the larger perspective, it really doesn't matter at all. Positive impacts in the lives of others is what seems to carry though time and maybe our only real contribution any of us make. I know that we all feel that Mike did this well. Those things that we dont like in ourselves and that we wish we could change are just distractions from the purpose of this short blip. It seems so easy to forget to slow down and to look within for the important answers. Miss talking with you, bro.

Before Michael was a well respected doctor he was just Mike to us here in Jamaica Plain, MA. I met him in publishing where we were both working temporarily and struck an immediate friendship. Not long after, he ended up taking a room in our three bedroom apartment in Boston where we all became good friends with many a night of big laughs, bottles of wine, and rousing conversation with the constant parade of other characters and friends in the neighborhood that seemed to congregate in our place. Always quick with his wit, engaging, and passionate, Mike was a presence like no other. We last caught up several years ago where we learned of his budding family and amazing career as a doctor. We all were, and still are, so proud of him, and we were looking forward to connecting again since it had been way too long. We'll miss you, brother. You'll always be part of our best memories and we wish you peace now. Our best to Andrea, Eli and Ava.

I was so sorry to learn that Mike's family, and the world at large, lost Mike. He called me three weeks before his passing after not having spoken with him for at least a decade. He was still the whip-smart, charming, warm, gentle friend I remember so vividly. One of the kindest souls on this planet. Genuinely a loving and compassionate provider and person.
I feel like it was just yesterday he was helping me learn chemistry and biology while working in the Dept of Emergency Medicine. He was bright and witty and could make a person laugh so easily.
