Michael Donnellan Obituary

Donnellan, Michael

Dr. Michael Donnellan passed away in Albuquerque, NM on June 20, 2016 following a difficult battle with pancreatic cancer.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; his children: daughter, Ashlene (Greg Miller); son, Brian (girlfriend, Anne Leazer); daughter, Bridget (Matt McCormick); grandchildren, Kiera and Kyle Miller; brother, Barry Donnellan (Loida) of Fairbanks, AL; and his sister, Marie O'Hara of Dublin, Ireland; his brother-in-law, Roger Olson and sister-in-law, Barbara Beeson of Fergus Falls, MN; and numerous nephews and nieces. He also leaves behind his "brother of the heart", Joe Kelly and his wife, Angela, of Oranmore, County Galway; Ireland.

In his youth, Dr. Donnellan was a major competitor in golf throughout the country of Ireland. He won provincial tournaments as well as an Irish Boys Championship. When time allowed as an adult in medical school and the practice of medicine, he continued to play golf competitively. He won the Four Hills Country Club golf championships in 1979, 1980, 1983 and 1984. The last few years found him playing golf with his new friends at Albuquerque Country Club. Following graduation from Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, he emigrated in 1963 to the USA to continue his education in internal medicine at UNMH. He maintained an internal medicine practice for over 40 years in Albuquerque.

His family was his pride and joy. As proud as he was of their success professionally, he was most proud that he had reared "good people". Throughout his years of solo internal medicine practice, he treated his patients as though they were family. He provided house calls from the day he entered practice until the day he retired. He could be found in the middle of the night at the bedside of a dying patient offering comfort and support to the family. He devoted himself to give his patients the best care possible. He and the family wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to his longtime friend and physician, Dr. Neal Shadoff.

"Ni fheice me leithid aris." (Gaelic for "I will not see his like again.") In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember him may make a donation in his name to Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless, P.O. Box 25445 Albuquerque, NM 87125-0445 or www.abqhch.com/donate

A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Please visit our online guestbook for Dr. Donnellan at

Dr. Donnellan was always respectful to the nurses at the hospital and was cheerful and kind to me as a coworker. He was fortunate to have Beverly for a wife and work partner. The world has lost a good man. My sincerest sympathy to Beverly and the family.

I first got to know Michael when I was referred to him when my former doctor retired. During the years he not only was my doctor but frequently my counsellor ( as he was to so many of his patients/friends). Beverly was also a mainstay in that office.

After his retirement we enjoyed a too short time of golfing together at ACC. He was a true gentleman, friend and mate. Goodbye, my friend. I hope to see you over the hill. Patty sends her love and gratitude as well. Bill Snead
