Richard (Fr Croghan) was my 9th grade teacher at the Ateneo de Manila, 1961-1962 and I've remembered him fondly ever since. Only recently learned how his life developed after our paths parted. Very happy for him.

Lillian, I think of you often. I remember when we attended the mock trial to watch our granddaughters act as lawyers. I was not going to attend because I had a fall that resulted in a beautiful black eye. But granddaughter told me that her friend's grandfather had a black eye also and attended all the sessions. To my surprise I walked in to see and you and Dick sitting behind me. We had a good laugh about our matching black eyes! I so enjoyed those days that we shared. Dick was great fun and such a wonderful gifted man. I also remember when we worked together at the medical school watching you two walk to together always holding hands. It is wonderful love story.

So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. He was a great neighbor. We would talk over the back fence about how beautiful his yard was, and how to get rid of the pesky squirrels.
We would talk about how my kids were doing in school and sports. And how my son was doing in college.
I would honk my horn and wave at him when I saw him running. We would talk about his competitions and how he was the young guy in his age group.
It was an honor to know him. He will be missed.

So very sorry to hear the sad news about Dick. To you, Lillian, and to your family, my deepest sympathy. I will miss talking to Dick about gardens and Japanese history.

Dick was a wonderful teacher. I took his class on Thomas Merton and his class taught me about Merton but more about generosity. Dick was a scholar with wonderful materials that he shared with us. But his attitude of kindness, of deep listening to our questions, of a sense of wonder about his material was truly inspiring. On the last day he presented books to all of us. I knew that his salary for the class paid for those books-so he made very little in that class in a monetary sense. But it was in giving that he received and in that way he was compensated. That one class and what I learned inspires me to this day with my own students-to give, to be generous, to have wonder with what you teach but also to have wonder with life itself. May he rest in peace.
