Richard Mason



Richard Mason, 85, of Albuquerque passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Rose F. Mason for 59 years.

Born in

Crownpoint, NM, he was the third oldest son of the late Edgar Mason and Cecelia (Tom) Mason. He is preceded in death by his son, Ralph Mason, his sister, Lorraine James and three brothers, James Mason, Danny Mason, and Irwin Mason.

As valedictorian and voted, "most likely to succeed," he graduated from Wingate High School in Ft. Wingate, NM in 1958 with two pursuits: the first to marry the salutatorian of his class, Rose Francis in 1963, and to eventually move to Albuquerque to pursue their educational pursuits in civil engineering and nursing. He was active throughout his life; running track in high school, running and walking daily, fishing and hunting, gardening, a good handyman, attending his grandkids' sporting events, and grilling family

dinners.

From about 9 years old, he worked first at a trading post and sheepherder and eventually graduated to a draftsman, surveyor, and civil engineer. As an engineer, he worked for Bovay Engineering, Gardner & Associates, Gardner, Mason & Associates, Richard Mason & Associates, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Transportation Department. He worked until he retired at 81 years old.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two children, Cynthia Mason and Cheryl Mason of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Senna and Kail of Bloomfield, NM and Iris and Linden of Albuquerque; brothers, Eddie Mason of Tsaile, AZ and Rueben Mason of Thoreau, NM, as well as numerous relatives throughout the Southwest and California.

Memorial services were held at Cope Memorial in Gallup with burial at Rehoboth Missionary Cemetary on Friday, October 21, 2022.
