Robert Portillos Obituary
On December 31, 2023 Robert Portillos with his wife Louise, daughter Lois and son Greg by his side, peacefully and quietly passed to Heaven.
Robert was born on August 4, 1938 in Springer New Mexico to his mother Lugarda Portillos and his father Jose Portillos.
Robert lived a life of public service. Robert worked 35 years for the State of New Mexico. He started at the New Mexico Boy's School business office and rose to a Cabinet Secretary for the Department of The Youth Authority. Robert also proudly served in the New Mexico Army National Guard for 36 years retiring as a Command Sergeant Major. Robert was a pillar in the community of Springer and northeastern New Mexico. He worked for the Springer, Wagon Mound, Cimarron and Maxwell Housing Authorities and he was able to get funding and remodel housing units. He served on the Springer School Board, he wrote grants and received funding to upgrade the St. Joseph Parish, and he worked with the Legislature and received funding to build a new Health Clinic and Assisted Living facility in Springer. Robert was an advocated for the less fortunate and unjustly treated and he helped and mentored many people throughout his life.
Robert loved spending time with his family, taking care of his dogs, going to and watching the Dallas Cowboys games, fishing at Eagle Nest Lake, fly fishing at the San Juan River, and eating with family and friends at his favorite restaurants.
Robert is survived by his wife Louise Portillos and his children and their spouses: Lois and Ralph Romero, Greg Portillos, stepchildren and their spouses: Frank and Bao Cruz, Shawn and Jan Fernandez, Tamara and James Grayson, grandchildren and great grandchildren: Alexia Greenwood and Mark Greenwood, Gavin Greenwood, Layla Greenwood, Jillian Greenwood, Aryiah Grayson, Aryana Grayson, James Grayson III and numerous nieces, nephews. He is also survived by his brothers Gilbert Portillos and George Gonzales.
A memorial service will be held at St. Joseph Parish at a later date to be announced following a gravesite service at the Angel Fire Veterans Cemetery.

Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend the Holy Rosary and Mass honoring Mr. Robert Portillos. Mr. Portillos was my first boss in my first job as a teacher. He gave a young educator a job and was supremely supportive in a challenging role. My career as an educator began at the New Mexico Boys' School with Robert Portillos as superintendent. That experience was the best education I ever had_hands down_in becoming an educator. I will be forever grateful to him, and I will pray for him during the Rosary and Mass. Sincere condolences to his entire family and to the community of Springer.

i am shocked and saddened to see the passing of Roberto, and may he RIP. he was such an important part of my life at the NM Boys' School where i served him in various roles until he asked me to become Supt when he became cabinet secretary of CYFD. i loved Robert and admired, respected, and appreciated his intellect, knowledge, commitment to Springer and the Boys School....I learned SO much from him during our 13 years together and he taught me much about life. I can't believe he has passed and we had reconnected in recent years and sadly i didn't get to see him since i moved away from the Land of Enchantment more than 20 years ago to take a Presidential appointment i was privileged to receive. I know his many accomplishments and his military service to the National Guard and know that Phyllis and Greg loved him and were proud to be his kids. i write this with a heavy heart and much love for my dear friend Roberto. May his memory be for a blessing to the many who knew him and were privileged to be affected by him.

Mr. Robert Portillos will be greatly missed. He hired me in 1979 at the New Mexico Boys’ School and I considered him to be a mentor, trusted advisor and ultimately a confidante and friend. In addition, he was such to countless individuals as well as a tireless advocate and proponent for multiple causes, all of which were for the betterment of the people and communities of Springer and the surrounding area.
