Sondra Hammack Obituary

Sondra Todhunter Long Hammack

Sondra Todhunter Long Hammack, age 88, died on April 21st, 2024 surrounded by the love of her family.

Sondra was born on May 2nd, 1935 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her travels early in life led her to California, where she met the love of her life, David Warren Hammack. The two were married in Los Gatos, CA on March 7th, 1953, and were fortunate to celebrate their 71st wedding anniversary in March 2024. After their marriage, the pair began to create their family, which would ultimately consist of three daughters and two sons. The family came to reside in Corrales, NM. With the help of their children, David and Sondra constructed an exceptionally warm and beautiful home for themselves, which Sondra would reside in until her death.

After successfully raising her children, Sondra's travels took her to many exciting destinations across the globe. She was well-spoken, well-read, and intelligent, and she achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science from UNM.

Sondra was known for her compassionate nature. Her nurturing, genuinely tender, and notably kind presence filled any room she occupied. She was an outstanding mother, wife, and friend. Sondra was always happy to share her time and great stories with her loved ones. She listened attentively to everyone she spoke to with sincere care and interest. Sondra enjoyed walks throughout The Bosque and many different mountains across the country. She was a remarkably talented artist and weaver. She was a lover of birds, opera, flowers, music, nature and all of its creatures, friends, family, and art. Her wonderfully creative and thoughtful soul will be missed by those fortunate enough to have known her.

Sondra is survived by her husband, five children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom took great comfort in her affectionate and warm company.

Sondra greatly influenced my life as a young 20 year old on his own for the first time. When I first moved to NM, the Hammack home was a welcome refuge for me and so many others over the years. Sondra was perhaps the warmest, most welcoming, and inclusive soul I have every known. I have filled my own home with the warmth of plants as a result of her inspiration in the way she decorated her home. Her memory will live on with me forever.

Some Things that I Love Most about my Mother

Unconditional love for everything she came across to know. Nurturing all living things with her mind her body and soul.
Wisdom to know that kindness is the skeleton key to happiness to unlock any and all closed doors.
Dog whisperer and mother hen adopting in injured, maimed or wayward ones providing the security of home. Caring for and feeding everyone, all creatures great and small.
She had a knack to make all living things thrive and flourish and eventually to grow. Puppies, kittens, plants and people. Birds and bees and butterflies, and even horses too.
Her appreciation for music and visual art is instilled in me, by her encouraging support in all my endeavors of such. Exposing me to opera, symphonies and music lessons with a variety of instruments greatly enhanced my existence.
She loved hiking in the mountains through meadows and forests all around the country. Around the lakes and along the streams and rivers. Hiking together we´d find almost everything from calypso lady slippers, varieties of columbine, wild strawberries and more, to lichens and mushrooms, growing underneath a canopy of pine trees.
Delighted in the meadows of wildflowers, from the marshlands to the prairie, underneath open skies of sunshine. Like faeries we would flitter from one flower to another accompanied with butterflies, singing birds and bees. Days like these made us very happy just to be.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Hammack family. We were fortunate to have David install the electricity in our Corrales home 45 years ago. Our paths crossed many times with the Hammack family throughout the years.
