Thomas Heldt Obituary
Thomas Frederic Heldt, Jr. passed away on November 27, 2023, after a short illness. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 24, 1940, to Thomas Heldt and Mary Adaline Maday Heldt. The Heldt family moved to New Mexico in 1950 for the temperate climate. Thomas graduated from the University of New Mexico and earned a Masters degree in Literature. He married Marian Howell on December 1, 1973, and they welcomed their daughter, Lisa Susanne, on February 25, 1978. During his career he worked for the Air Force Special Weapons Laboratory and spent 35 years with the Army Corps of Engineers, including serving as the Chief of Information Systems for the Albuquerque District. Thomas retired in 2003 and traveled the world with his wife.
He will be remembered as an avid photographer that chronicled his travels in great detail and was enthusiastic to get the perfect sunset snap. He loved to tell jokes, stories, and always had an appropriate and interesting quote for every occasion. Thomas loved to go on off-roading adventures with his wife and daughter in his Jeep, often getting lost on the back roads, but enjoying every twist, turn and pothole. Thomas had a deep love of the natural world as well as being devoted to animals, with an affinity toward the family's beloved shelties. Thomas was a Christian and believed in sure and certain resurrection. Memorial service and inurnment will be at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Pl. N.E., Albuquerque, NM 87106 at 11:00am on January 5, 2024 with streaming of the service on Zoom, YouTube and Facebook for those who cannot attend in person.
He was preceded in death by his elder sister Rosemary (2023). Thomas is survived by his wife, Marian, his daughter Lisa (Patrick), his sister Jane Baca (Ed), brother-in-law George Udell, nieces Abby, Jenny, Katie and Zoey, nephew Mark (Mindy) and great nieces Avery, Hannah, Nina, and great nephew, Ben.
His incredible generosity will be missed by his family, along with his sharp, intelligent and wry view of the world. Please send contributions to the Animal Humane Society of Albuquerque in lieu of flowers.
