Charles VanFosson Obituary

Charles Judson VanFosson died of complications over a spine injury on Sunday, June 9, at the age of 70. Judson was a larger-than-life character and a true bon vivant. He loved family, food, and friends above all else. He collected first-edition murder mysteries and art, and he was easily recognized for his light blue Ford Thunderbird that he nicknamed "Thunderchicken," which he won in a charity raffle. Judson graduated from Mississippi State University and was a diehard Bulldogs fan, much to the chagrin of the rest of his family and friends. He later packed his car and road-tripped across the country to live for several years in San Francisco, and he left part of his heart there when he moved back to Louisiana. Judson lived in Baton Rouge and worked for the State Legislature for many years before finally retiring to his childhood home in Crowley. In Crowley, he served the First Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years, including as Clerk of the Session and, for the last decade, as Treasurer. But the tried-and-true loyal friendships Judson made throughout every stage of his life are the true legacy he leaves behind. Judson is survived by his sister, Marjorie Harral, and his brother, Ralph "Buddy" VanFosson, Jr., his nieces, Ashley Wright, Ryan Wright, Alyse Stevens, and Jessica Cloyd, as well as many grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Katrina VanFosson, and parents Frances and Ralph "Van" VanFosson. His funeral will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Crowley with Rev. Rachelle Brown. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home, 301 North Avenue F, Crowley, LA 70526, 337-783-3313.

I became friends with Judson 43 years ago when we met at the capitol. We remained friends since and spoke frequently. He loved it when his Mississippi St Bulldogs beat LSU in anything. He was loquacious and funny. I was shocked at his passing and i know i will often think about calling him or sending him something that would make him laugh or prompt him to call. Rest in peace my friend.

Judson was the dearest friend and the most willing dinner companion, which were not simply meals, but dining experiences. He was a steadfast friend of many, who always had your back with his support. And if you just needed a hand to hold, he would be there for that, too. Oh, how he will be misses.

Judson was my cousin- our grandparents were siblings. He was an absolute joy to be around. Funny, funny guy. Loved him and will certainly miss him.

I never knew Charles VanFosson. We were his neighbor and always called him Judson. I babysat him when I was a teenager. I knew Katrina, Marjorie and Buddy. We are so sorry about his loss.
