""She stood in the shadows so others could shine. She loved a lot in her time.""- George Jones. Jesus said to her, ""I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11, 25-26. At the age of 95, in the early evening of February 7, 2021, Virgie, affectionately called ""Mom"" by both friends and family, passed away of old age. She was ready to meet her Savior. She lived a long, simple, quiet life. Growing up on a small farm in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, she gained knowledge of a strong work ethic and skills that lasted a lifetime. I remember her telling me once that after she had children, her oldest, Ruth would entertain her little brothers Ronald and Dale under the wagon where the summer Louisiana sun was a little less scorching while Mom worked in the fields picking cotton. She was the first up every morning, having coffee and toast at 4:30am, and the last to quit working, no matter the job or conditions. Having survived the Great Depression, she taught us the value of hard work and frugality. As the best mother/grandmother anyone could ever want, our grandma had a heart of gold. She was always there in our times of need. She was a loyal friend and the heart and soul of our family. Virgie worked for over 40 years in the food service industry. Everyone wanted her recipes but she never measured anything. She was known for her gumbo, jambalaya, sweet dough pies and pineapple cake, but really, any time company popped in she insisted on feeding them and every meal served was delicious. An avid gardener, she raised plants and children with a heavy dose of love and nurturing. Even in her mid-nineties Mom would often be spotted by friends, in her yard transplanting, watering flowers and pulling weeds on her hands and knees. I am pretty sure she only had to walk near a plant for it to stand tall and start blooming. Spending the majority of her life in Lafayette, Louisiana, Virgie was a devout Christian and a longtime member of St Genevieve and St Jules Catholic Churches. She was also a member of the Ladies Altar Society. She was generous to a fault and gave both her time and money to anyone in need. Virgie leaves behind three beloved children, Maida ""Ruth"" Patin, Ronald ""Ron"" Foux (Liz), James ""Dale"" Foux Sr (Chrystal); nine treasured grandchildren, Floyd J ""Tripp"" Patin III (Kyle), William ""Bill"" Foux (Lorien), Paige A Patin (Susan), Katrina McCarthy (Brian), James ""J.D."" Foux Jr., Joe McDaniel (Stacy), Ralph J Breaux III (Lisa), Justin D Foux (Amanda), Heather Degroot (Matthew); twenty one adored great grandchildren, two precious great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved very much. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Alphonse Foux. Also waiting to greet her in Heaven are her parents Paul McGuire and the former Edna Duplechin.; her siblings, Gervis McGuire, Oris McGuire, Doris M Abraham, Joyce McGuire Benoit; her daughter-in-law Linda C Foux; her sons-in-law, Floyd J Patin Jr and Ralph J Breaux Jr. Pallbearers will be Floyd J Patin III, William Foux, James Dale Foux Jr, Joe McDaniel, Ralph J Breaux III and Justin Foux. The family requests visiting hours be observed at Martin & Castille Funeral Home- Lafayette on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until service. A Rosary will be recited at 12:00 PM followed by the Funeral Service at 2:00 PM, with burial at Calvary Cemetery to follow.
