Ameer Ali Obituary

Anchorage resident Ameer Ali, 28, died doing what he loved. It was the early morning of Jan. 22, 2010, and he was flying near Sand Point in the Aleutians when his aircraft went down.

His memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Aviation Heritage Museum. Everyone is welcome. In lieu of flowers, please bring a dish to share at the potlatch dinner or donate to the Ameer Ali Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo Bank.

His body will be laid to rest with his family in Egypt.

Ameer was born June 10, 1981, in New York to Mary and Alarabi Ali. He grew up mainly in Hopewell Junction, N.Y., where he attended John Jay High School.

Some of his earlier years were also spent in Egypt learning about the culture, his family, language, and attending primary school. Upon returning to New York and graduating from high school, he joined the Marine Corps and worked as a flight mechanic for the next six years.

Ameer drove from his home in New York up to Alaska in 2006, drawn by the wilderness and the challenge of flying in Alaska. He worked as a flight instructor at Take Flight Alaska before getting his pilot's license. He quickly advanced from first officer to captain at Alaska Central Express and enjoyed flying in Southeast the most.

Ameer was a talented and passionate musician and particularly enjoyed the guitar, harmonica and keyboards. He loved the outdoors, especially hiking, and was always eager to get off the beaten path. Ameer was a wonderful cook and would often prepare old family recipes for his friends and family. He will be remembered for his compassion, generosity, humor, loving nature, and lively spirit.

"I always knew Ameer would do great things. ... big things. He took leaps, not steps. He was a person who gained strength each day, learning from every instance and using his passion for adventure to drive him to his goals and live his dreams at an incomparable pace. He was a true professional and a true joy to be around. You could not help but smile. (He was) the best brother anyone could ever hope to have, the best friend anyone could hope to have. He was my big brother. He was Ameer Ali," wrote his brother, Shareif.

I met Ameer in Farmingdale State University, he was my roommate and we became friends. He was such a wonderful person very easy to get along with, he had great respect for life. I remember his first flight lesson at the college, the night before he prep his flight bag with everything he might need for the flight, he was very excited to go flying in the morning. He had an early morning flight that day, he returned to the room at around 9 or ten oclock and was very excited that he had a very succesful first flight. He told me the instructor really liked him alot, he performed well, he told me he took her out for coffee and talked about his schedule for flights. That was Ameer everyone loved him, he was really easy to get along with. On september 11, 2001 we were in the room getting ready for class and we turned the tv on and we saw what was going on, He was a very proud U.S Marine and he immediately got ready and went to the main hall to offer his services. When i returned at the end of the weekend i found a note saying goodbye who told me his country needed him and he had to leave. We lost contact after that and i always hoped to find him online because I valued his friendship very much, this is how i learned about his death. I would like to extend my condolences to his family and friends, He was really a one of a kind person and i will miss him very much.. God Bless you Buddy and Rest in Peace..

Ameer was the perfect friend. He was incredibly easy to talk to, very understanding, and extremely loyal. Even after he moved out west he made every effort to stay in touch with his east coast friends.

I had the pleasure of both hiking and flying with Ameer several times, and each was always a special experience. He had such a revence for all living things. Its not every day you see such greatness in action, let alone stand next to it.

I will miss him for the rest of my living days, as will all those who were lucky enough to spend even a minimal amount of time with him. It was beautiful to see the diverse crowd that attended the memorial we had for him in Hopewell Junction, NY. I even heard that his funeral in Egypt was packed with mourners. I guess its just a testament to him, and his ability to make anyone feel like part of the group.

I'm not sure why he was taken from us so prematurely, and I may never understand. I mean if there was ever a guy you always had complete confidence in it was him. Thats why all this is such a shock. All I know is that if there is a heaven, or something comparable, he is waiting patiently for us there. Playing his harmonica and passing the time in peace.

We miss you buddy.

I like that a Marine Corp brother of Ameer's says that Ameer has regrouped with other Marines and is guarding Heavens gate. Well, so is my Dad,and that is a really nice thought. I miss you Ameer, I am better for having known you. God bless you, your family and friends.

We lost a great pilot, and a great person. Ameer set an example of what it meant to be a professional pilot and always worked to learn more. Full of knowledge, stories and laughs, we'll miss him.

We lost a great man. Ameer was always such a professional to fly with, and set such an example to those who worked with him. He was always studying and yearned to know everything he could about the industry and aviation in general. He was a great pilot, and a great guy to be around.
